Duck season starts in a week here, and I dislocated my right shoulder last night in a football game. This blows.

Not too bad, dislocation and a minor sprain. Out of football for 2 weeks. It happened in the first 30 seconds of the game, and I probably made it worse by not telling the coaches and staying in the game.

I'm gonna give you some advice, whether you listen or not is up to you...

At your age, 2 weeks isn't enough time to recover from a dislocation for it to properly heal.
I know right now your thoughts and priorities are on "the game", which is expected and totally understandable, but I'll guarantee you if you don't take care of this right, it's going to come back to haunt you and maybe for the rest of your life.
Been there, done that, and am still recovering from the surgery I had in May.

Even if it feels "ok" now, that doesn't mean there wasn't serious damage done.
You really should have it looked at, and hopefully an MRI. It would be a whole lot easier to have fixed now, than later when you're really trying to make ends meet, or support a family, or...whatever.
And, it's a WHOLE lot easier to fix now than when you get older...

Best of luck!

Yep you're right take it from the old guys . Believe me I pay for it every day for having a hard head when I was young and thought I was bulletproof . Now I am all messed up for the rest of my life .
Take some extra time to heal ..

Tore a bunch of cartilage in my right shoulder three years ago. Didn't want to have surgery on it then. Wish I had now, bothers me almost everyday.

Oh and at the time when it was dislocated my thoughts and priorities were on the game, but after that was over and now I am hoping I will be able to shoot a shotgun next weekend for the opener. Maybe I'll just go with the 20 gauge.

Yes. Pair that dislocated shoulder with a broken wrist. Brilliant.

I'd get another opinion, and preferably from a shoulder specialist. And, the first thing they're gonna want is an MRI.

Here's the deal...Your shoulder socket is just made up of different bones that come together...
What keeps the head of the humerus IN the socket is the ligaments holding it up there, and...
The labrum. The labrum is cartilage that forms a "skirt" off of the socket and is actually responsible for holding it in place.
Think of it like a golf ball setting on a golf tee. The labrum is the raised ridge that keeps the ball from falling off.
If you were to sand off half of that ridge, the ball would fall off...

When you have a true dislocation, the labrum can be torn and damaged, and the ligaments get stretched out.
Rest helps with giving the ligaments time to heal and hopefully heal back to size, but if the labrum is torn it won't heal.

So, what you'll have is a sloppy shoulder without a functional labrum to keep it in place.
A lot of this depends on how severe the dislocation was...

Take care, and take care of yourself...

It wasn't that part of my shoulder. My collarbone dislocated from my shoulder.

Youre all gonna think I'm crazy but I usually shoot better if I don't shoulder the gun. Actually holding the stock a couple inches out away from my shoulder gives me better control. Maybe you could try that?

Maybe you should put the youth gun down and get the adult size one.

That would be counter productive.

I'd steer clear of the inertia guns if that's how you shoot...

I actually shot a teal this season one handed! A big group flew in at the speed of light, and by the time everyone started shooting, they were already leaving...
One of them flew straight past us and as I turned to my right, the left arm (the side that was operated on) didn't want to go.
So I just dropped it straight down, followed it with my right and not only hit it,...but totally destroyed it! :o

We all got a big laugh out of that one! Feathers rained down on us for what seamed like forever.

I really missed a good opportunity though...I was hunting with a group of young guys and I should have just played it cool and said something like, "Yea, sometimes I just get bored shooting them with both hands" ;)

That's funny .
I shoot right hand, but we have hunts where you have to use your left side to shoot all day .
