Always went with if you can't tie a knot just tie a lot.

I'd probably go to a hardware store and buy some small copper tubing and make my more crimps

Try using a fisherman's cinch knot. Put the line through the hole and bring it up and around the main line with a few twist, moisten the line around the twists with a little spit, put the tag end back through the hole created by the twist, and pull it tight. Since the line is so stiff, you may have to hold the tag end with your teeth as you pull the knot tight. Haven't done it with the 400 lb mono you are probably using (so I may be talking out of my ass  ), but have used it many times with heavy mono when fishing in the gulf.

You need the crimps and a crimper.

This is where I got all my stuff.

Don't really need a crimper. I did mine with side hacks. Worked just fine

I'm sure they make it a lot easier though.

In a pinch like this you can use a threaded nut for a bolt. 1/4 or 5/16 nut might work.

Thread it through like normal using the nut of your choosing.

Then place nut and mono on metal. Ball hitch will do.

Hit the nut with a hammer until its secure.

I have seen snares made this way. With metal cable.

If you are trying to make a loop, this works for me. With heavy line you'll want to reduce the number of twists to get it to cinch up clean.

Google San Diego jam knot or dropper loop both of those will get you by. I'm guessing you don't do a lot of offshore fishing...

It's a little farther of a drive than I like for an afternoon fishing trip to go offshore.
