ringneck hen?

Postby coondog » Sat Nov 01, 2014 11:35 am

does a ringneck hen always have a white bar across the bill? Shot a small diver this morning with white circles around the eye. Was thinking ringneck but no white on bill.

Mature ringneck hens have a band on the bill, juvenile hens don't.

If it looked like this, tell nobody that it looks like this, and don't take pictures.

It was a wood duck hen. After I got home and got it out of the bag I figured it out. Thought it was a diver because it dove a couple times when the pup was after it. Im new to the waterfowl game and am hunting solo so I appreciate the help.

Yep, they will all dive when the dog is on their tail. I've had the worst luck loosing crippled wood ducks. If in doubt, chute 'em again.

Congrats and welcome to the addiction.

Not sure if I'm referring to duck hunting or the waterfowlforum. Probably both.

Haha. Wow. I will just keep my stupid questions to myself from now on.
Thanks to the few that lent a helping comment. As I said. Im new to the game. Ive spent the last 25 years running coonhounds and not much time for anything else. So im going from hero to zero. But im enjoying the hell out of itand having some good hunts, minus the fact that I didnt know a woodduck from a ringneck.

You can't do that. If people didn't share their stupid thoughts and questions on the internet, it would collapse from lack of use.
