Guided hunt

Postby Laguna Madre » Wed Dec 17, 2014 10:37 pm

I went on my second ever guided hunt down in the Guadulupe Delta near Seadrift, Texas. It actually felt kind of awkward being dropped off by an air boat and stepping into an elevated blind and not even really getting my feet muddy. Usually I am the one picking the spot and setting out the decoy spread. We started off on the first day of the second split waking up at 4am to 65 degree temperatures and zero wind. I was thinking the guide is going to have to pull something out of his hat to make it happen with these conditions and sure enough it was kind of slow but we managed to bag 14 ducks between 5 guys and we missed a few. The mosquitos were so thick I was literally breathing them in. The second day was much better and we had about a 10 mph wind and we started off right at first light with dropping all 6 of a flight of gaddies. We then banged out a few teal then it just died. The ducks were flying but they were flaring before committing to the spread. I was thinking this really sucks to actually pay someone to take me hunting and the duck hunt is below average. Then about 830am the flights started committing and we had flocks of 30 plus teal buzzing our decoys. After it was all over we were just shy of a 5 man limit with a mixed bag of gaddies, teal (blue and green), spoonies, and a few blue bill. The lodge we hunted with was Castaway lodge and the guide was knowledgeable and friendly and the Air Ranger airboat was bad ass. I don't like to pay to hunt but I moved to a new area and haven't been hunting all season so instead of falling into a depression I forked out some cash and I'm glad I did.

Photos aren't showing as such on my computer, but it sounds like a neat trip.
