First I was looking at big pull behind smokers but decided most of the time I didn't need that kind of area to cook and also have access to one I can borrow any time I want. then I was set on just getting a large or XL green egg for the house but some of the others (primo, kamado joe, and grill dome) look like they have a few more features and a little more of a sleek design . I can't decide now. anybody have any experience with the other brands beside BGE?

I've got an Akorn, which by my recollection was about 1/4 of the price of a BGE or Primo.

For general grilling, it is absolutely awesome...as a smoker it leaves some to be desired, it's hard for me to control the temps more than 2-3 hours

I was wondering about those too. The price is intriguing, but like you said you can't "set it and forget it" which is what I'm trying to get away from with all the babysitting my UDS requires. I think that other guy from the traverse city area of michigan who used to post a lot on here had an akorn too didn't he?

Yes...I have a buddy that has a Traeger and one that has a Louisiana, both with electronic controls, and they can put meat on set a temp they want to cook to via the internal probe and walk away...the buddy that has the Louisiana did a brisket for 22 hours this weekend...that's probably the route I'll go next for a smoker

I don't think I'm lazy enough for a pellet grill but I am too lazy for the UDS

Then, maybe the upper end kamado makes sense for you. My issues with the akorn are related to the seals and not being able to control temps long periods.
I know a guy with a Primo XL and he can do most anything with it.

That's my issue with the UDS.
I'm certain on needing/wanting the upper end kamado but just don't know much about the ones that aren't green.

Well I had no choice but to go with the BGE.

She went ahead and got me the nest and I bought the side mates today to use for now.
We are going to build a new back porch with a roof hopefully this summer and I'm going to build a nice cooking station with a sink and a spot for the egg on the porch when it's done.
