I don't watch a lot of tv however I do like a good documentary and The Colosseum is one such show IMO. Amazing for a society that was supposedly the peak of civilization, was so barbaric and cruel. Last nights episode shows just how little the Romans cared about anything other than themselves. The episode was about how they captured the animals, the men who fought wild animals, and has some amazing statistics of how they wiped out animal populations to provide entertainment for the masses. If you haven't watched it you should check it out.. Next week is: The Gladiatrix. Should be good. I do hope that they cover the Naval Battles which took place in the first 10 years after it was built.

I don't really understand that phrase about Rome for exactly that reason.

Except, arguably with their own citizens, they were not civilized in any way we would use that term.

Peak of power maybe, but not civility.

Then again, how many people today don't distinguish between power and good.

The practical definition of civility is nobody gets what they want just because they want it.

Something many struggle with today. Hell they entire Democrat platform is the antithesis of civility. If you need it, we will use the power of government to take it for you. That's not civil. But it does explain why some people would refer to Rome has the peak of civilization because who ever took more just because they wanted it for a longer period of time than Rome?

I'm actually watching a fictional series from HBO called Rome.

When I exercise, I like to watch something to distract me from the fact that I'm exercising. I used to jump around the various cable news shows. They weren't great to start but gut dumber and dumber and I ceased watching them some years ago. So since then, my go to has been TV series. Rome is the one I'm on now. Don't know how accurate it is, but it does not paint a pretty picture.

They only made one of him.

I thought "Rome" was really good. Have you watched Deadwood yet? If not I highly recommend it, that and Boardwalk Empire were some of my favorite HBO shows.....

I watched Deadwood. Big fan of those kind of series and movies and thought that was very good.

Boardwalk Empire. I need to give it a try again. I watched it when it originally came out. I liked the first season, but lost interest after that.

Having been in the roman coliseum twice now, it's the floor/substructure that's the most impressive features of it to me.......thus how they managed the critters and slaves/fighters etc. out of the eye of the spectators.

Never been to Italy but I lived in Venice....California.

I live not too far from Marseilles (mar sails) Illinois and I've flown into Marseilles (mar say) France.

They are about as different as the pronunciation.

Some were looking to escape. Others were just looking to get rich. I don't really know much about the French immigrants and why they came to the new world. Central PA where I grew up there were many immigrant groups for many reasons, but not any significant numbers from France.

And why the people of Blue Ball, PA came to the U.S. one can only speculate. Maybe because it is only 8 miles from Intercourse, PA But if you are heading to Intercourse from Blue Ball, but miss the turn, in a few miles you will end up in Bird in Hand, PA.

You know how Stuttgart says they're the rice and duck capital? Weiner, Arkansas had that name first because of Bayou Deview. That place isn't what it was but you can see how it was the rice and duck capital.
