I have two small trees growing on my property that I can't identify. It doesn't grow wild in the woods or anything, only in town or near houses. I cut one down last sumer and now there are a zillion shoots growing from the stump. I've been trying to identify the tree for a couple years now, but I'm stumped.

I know. I can identify all the trees I see regularly and it bothers me that I don't know what this one is. A google search eliminates sassafras as a suspect. Too bad, I was really looking forward to putting a tap in my root beer tree.

We've got tons of them here. There's one growing under the deck, and another by the barn. They are tasty to chew on. But sassafras has 3 different leaf types on the same tree. I think it's the only one like that.

You should piss on it and see how it reacts.

Would you believe I have?

That goddamn stump won't die. It might be time to get some rock salt.

Get stump remover instead. The upside is that if you add a little charcoal, it'll explode.

Never heard about this. What is it? I cut the tree down because it was rubbing up against my shed. Not sure I want explosions in this case.

It doesn't explode on its own. You have to mix it with some soft wood charcoal and a pinch of sulfur, if you want it to explode. It's sold in Walmart, hardware stores, etc. should be with the fertilizer/lawn care/weed killer type stuff. Spectra is the brand most common here. Comes in a black or silver quart bottle. It's just potassium nitrate.

Saltpeter? That stuff mixed with sugar makes nice smoke bombs. And isn't what you just described black powder?

My guess is sassafras and was immediately.
Then read the thread.
I agree with the general concensus.
Look up "mitten shaped leaf" and see what comes up.
Duh.

You will never get rid of it FC. Smells like piss when you burn it. Completely useless wood. Grows like a weed here.

Sassafras has a no-lobed leaf, a mitten shaped leaf, and a 3-lobed leaf, on the same branch. And they're smooth. If it doesn't have these 3, then it's not sassafras.

Yeah it's a bitch to kill. I remember my dad had to dump a bunch of salt on a stump before it would stop throwing out shoots. I'm gonna get some rock salt at my dad's house and kill it good.

The shoots are nice and straight though, they would have made nice arrows if I was still into primitive archery.
