Easy Pulled Pork

Postby Feelin' Fowl » Thu Feb 20, 2014 2:02 am

This is a staple during the colder months at the FF household. Way to easy, and it's good.

Get a pork shoulder. Bone in is fine, but I prefer boneless for this. I typically get a 3.5-4# shoulder

Place it in a crock pot

Cover with soda. I use Root Beer.

Cook on low for 9-10 hours. The pork with have the flavor and aroma of the Root Beer (until masked by sauce).

It will fall apart on its own when you take it out, and unlike smoking a shoulder or butt, it's nearly impossible to mess it up.

You can put the meat back in the crock pot (sans soda this time) and add sauce if you choose.

I just add sauce and cole slaw to a samich.

Throw it in on your way to work, and you've got dinner when you get home. Easy peasy...

I told my wife about this and she said she has also heard of using Dr pepper. Guess I'll have to try it.

Dr. Pepper is the other that I've heard of. Probably just as good.

Coke is good too. But I've heard root beer is the best.

Back on topic ;)
Try vernors sometime, the ginger works well with pork.
9-10 hours is a bit long got a butt, usually 5-6 is plenty, just my opinion though.

I pictured FF hiding behind "that log" on the river pulling his pork.
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

5-6 is probably all that's necessary, but I like mine to fall apart on it's own. I don't think it can be overcooked in the soda.

It falls apart somewhere around 190-210 degrees. Every time.

I have a suggestion that will make your pork better FF. Forgive me.

If you smoke the pork for a while first and then throw it in the crockpot later the smokiness would make it more better. :)

They say that the first five minutes in a smoker is when it happens. Smoke it with charcoal with some hickory or fruit wood. Let it go til the fire goes out, then transfer to your crockpot.

First four hours. Before I started doin hotter and faster bbq in my uds I would sometimes just smoke it for four hours and the wrap it up and throw it in the oven. The first four hours are critical. Once it gets above 40 degrees you got 4 hours to get it over 140 or you risk botulism.

You guys are over thinking this.

It's supposed to be easy. Throw it in, walk away, come back later, then eat.

I don't temp shit from the crock pot. It falls apart, and it's done. I like 10 hours. Can't dry it out in the soda. Nearly impossible to mess it up.

Good recipe FF. my sister has done this before and it was good.
Just as a purist it irks me. I cook for internal temp, not time. It's done when its done.
Sorry for the hi-jack.

No biggie man. I prefer it done the "right" way, but it's but always a good idea in our winter months.

Yeah it would be hell to keep a smoker at temps up there. When it gets below freezing here I have to use a one of those rocket heaters to keep my drum at temp.
