I will say I've never used a deer stop, so have never priced them, but this place is the cheapest I've found for most everything, and the guy ships very fast, too.

I'd take the deer stops off if I could, but then again, I'm a law abiding citizen ;)
The ones I've rebuilt I just cut a slit in a small nut and hammer that onto the cable. Off to check out that site.

Probably one of the last updates for this season. I've got about 9 days left. The season runs through February, but the fur haulers come around to pick up around March 1, and the pelts need 2 weeks at an absolute minimum to dry enough to ship. Been a good couple weeks, but the hides are nowhere near as good as they were even 3 weeks ago, already starting to shed out.

I had 2 grays, 2 reds, and 6 coons left hanging after I took the first load to the hauler, so it's been pretty good lately.

I'd love to get into some fox like that!
Been slow around here lately, this warm snap made slush out of everything! The rabbits quit moving and so did the coyotes, I'm guessing once we get sOme snow back theyll start moving again. There's no way the rabbits could move in all the slop!

They spiked really high at the first sale of the season (last week), but the big auctions are yet to come. All of my early furs are in the Feb. 17 auction in Toronto, so my fingers are crossed. The late furs in that last pic will decrease some in price, but hopefully not too much.

Used to be pretty low here, because the farmers kept them in check. But now, the farmers are going, and the farms are being turned into developments. And you know as well as I do that city people and suburnanite neighborhood dwellers are complete dumbasses when it comes to wildlife- "Awwww, look how cute the little fox is, just like in the Disney movies". So now the foxes are getting more prevalent. I've got more farmers that want me to trap their land than I have hours in the day. (Although if I knew that prices were going to jump to what they're at, I damn sure would've made more time  )

When I'm out hunting, I see far more grays than reds, probably 10:1.

wow.. foxes are neat lil creatures (and easy to knock out  ).. but pretty much a novelty around here... (i don't even shoot em anymore as i see so few).. coyotes have ruined the population. and them sob's are hard to kill.. they get hunting and we kill alot of em, but not enough to even really keep their numbers in check.. its bad enough that i'll kill 1 in the yard every now and then.

Talked to my old man last night and he said that my uncle has another spot for me to nab some coyotes just down the road a little ways. Now to get some more snares and get serious about this!

Yesterdays checks revealed nothing in the sets, but theyre was quite a few moving. I had one somehow walk through my snare, or he snuck under or brushed it aside somehow without dropping it :x Todays checks ought to be interested with the shitstorm we're getting right now!

You're right about the knocking out- a little tap on the snout with the beating stick puts them down, and a whack on the neck does them in. A coon on the other hand is one of the hardest sonofabitches out there to kill. I've wore myself slick hitting those bastards when I don't have the .22  Coyotes around here aren't tremendously bad, but they're getting there fast. A few trappers have started having their foxes killed while in the traps, their backs tore out and left for dead. Coyotes are good for nothing.

So far the coyotes that ive got, i dont want to be that close to them when theyre that pissed off! I like my .22 from 20 yards right through the ears! Knowing my luck if i clubbed one it would prob just knock out and come back alive and tear me up!

Just got back from checking sets, no luck. No sign, no tracks, nothing, everything is hunkered down in this crap weather. Supposed to be nice this weekend so i got a good feeling about it.

On the rare occasion when I've shot a fox, I shoot it in the pumphouse, not the head. The old timers do the same for coyotes. It will kill it, and it bleeds a whole lot less. That blood pumps out of the head pretty quick, and gets all in the ears and snout, hard to clean off. Shoot it a little high in the chest, and the majority of the blood stays inside. It's not the holes that matter as much as the blood, when it comes to value, especially on a light colored animal.

If you're not selling, it really doesn't matter. But it is much less messy when you're loading them up.

Put a few more sets out this morning, a few on vinces neighbors i got permission from yesterday, found some REALLY promising spots, dog highwways running through the swamp, rough getting in but should produce. Also behind the old mans he put some deer/elk carcasses back there and its a starburst of tracks all around it, put a few back there too, ill be putting more out tomorrow, just seeing what theyre habits are like. Im sensing some dogs will die in the next couple weeks.
I checked the other spot my uncle got me hooked up with, should be some easy pickins, but not gonna jinx myself, Just a swampy swail in the middle of a cherry orchard with brush tunnel trails and doggy freeways running through it. GOnna put these two dozen snares to the test.
My scope should be here wednesday or thursday, so hoping to do a little night hunting next weekend. Ive got a hankering to kill something!

Assa I forgot to ask ya, you ever put snare in an open field. Behind the old mans house theres a round bail and couple carcasses, looks like the yotes come from the same direction into it, ever had success staking the snare into the ground in the open?

Also, some of the spots ive got set are pretty thick and nasty, hard to see if a set has caught or not without approaching within shorter distance than I want. Ive thought about taking a peice of survey tape and tie a small peice above the set six or seven fit in a tree to mark where its at, think they would be able to see that? I dont think it would cause a problem, just easier to locate from a distance rather than spending time trying to locate the sets.

Yes, I run snares in cut bean and corn fields all the time. Around here, I put them in the tracks made by the pivot irrigation wheels where they roll through. Not really a "track", but just a harder spot in the dirt, and the foxes will use that to cross the field. I don't know about the tape, though. I'd try taking a pair of binoculars, first. That's what I use after daylight, and you can usually spot the wire from 20-30 yards away, even in thick stuff.

Most of my snares are set in the woods and swamp where I can anchor to a sapling or tree. I was looking at Pogo anchors for more open areas and trails, ever use these Assa? Just a washer basically driven into the ground with a special driver. They seem to have some pretty good holding power...

I was pondering picking up some, but getting them out after the season seems to be a pain. I was sorta thinking about drilling another hole in the side of the washer and attaching another cable, so when your ready to pull the anchor, just pull the extra cable to "re-vertical" the washer and pull it out, what ya think?

Use the Berkshire ends instead. You don't need a special tool to drive them, you can just grind a point on the end of a piece of rebar about 2 foot long and use that. As far as getting them out, if they aren't in a field, I usually just leave them. Otherwise, I have an old piece of axle that has a metal "loop" welded on about a foot up. The end is flat with a notch in it for sliding around the cable, the "loop" goes on the ground to act as a fulcrum to pull them up. Even then, they're tough. They honestly are made to be disposable. The Berkshire ends are around $4.00 a dozen or so (it's been a while since I bought them , but can't imagine they went up that much)

Must be a sweet job! I'm on the site now, what would you recommend? I usually stick to stouts and super hoppy IPAs

This is my friend's website. I've made a couple of recipes on the site. He has been brewing ever since I've known him(15 years ago) and he has some great beers. Against the Grain Brewing is what he plans on naming his brewery once he gets it started.

Better check on that name, There's already a "against the grain brewery" in Louisville. :(

Bro, I think we're packaging brown again soon, I'll snag a case or two from the low fill pile.
