Best Shot for Turkeys?

Postby birdman » Mon Feb 25, 2013 12:00 am

I have been using Hevi-13 for years with great results. After reading the results of the NWTF still pattern contests, I see that Hevi-13 won every round of the competition. I get good patterning out of my gun with it, probably not as good as the winners in the NWTF competitions but good enough. What is the best turkey round in your opinion, and why?

The only rounds they test are ones that come factory loaded.
TSS would be the only way to go if I had someone to load them. There are videos of 120yard patterns that are better than my 50 yard pattern. Also a video of them killing a turkey at 70 yards with #12 shot.

I have been shooting 2oz of H-13 7's through an Indian Creek .665 choke.
That load/choke will put 273 pellets in a 10" circle at a tape measured 40 yards.

As Eric said, TSS is where it's at.

Picked up 5lbs and I'm going to work up a 1.25oz load for the kids to run through their 20 gauge.

TSS and other HTL loads are without a doubt the best turkey loads, doesn't mean they are necessary. Lead 5 & 6 can work great out to 35-40 yards. If I could shoot any, it would be TSS#8. My favorite factory load is Hevi-13 2oz. #7. I reload 1 5/8 oz HW15 #7.
Dan, I did a 1.25oz load last year that was very good, see if I can find the recipe.

it aint about dads beating dads. When they are 3 yards away and dont see you a dove load would kill them.

I saw my cousin kill one at 55 yards one time. I much prefer the 20 yard shot. I am hoping Jarbo favors me with some high end shit, I am fairly shotgun illeterate. I know more about rifle ballistics.

TSS is like 18g, crazy dense. #9 shot is equilvent to steel bb weight.

Indeed. Lostknife uses a 28 ga for ducks with #9 TSS. More shot in that tiny shell than a 3 1/2 10ga and more penetration.

Cost me $10 a year for turkey loads. Knowing that every bird yhey have been shot at were 1 shot kills, all the way to 81 yards, is worth it to me. They buck the wind better than anything else, that might be the best thing about them for where I hunt.

Since it weighs so much, what is the heaviest load a 12ga could sustain? seems like after so much it would be too heavy, but I know about as much as reloading as I do underwater basket weaving.

No different really than other shot type...but because of individual peer weight you can drop down shot sizes and get wicked dense patterns and still maintain enough penetration to kill.

I'm sure you could stack 2.25-2.50 oz in a 3.5" hull, but there is no need to.

Guessing with lostkinfe's 1 5/8 load of 7's he has more pellets (ad better patterns) that you would with a 2oz load of lead 5's.

Yes, I know that part..but you could probably fit 4oz. of TSS into a 10ga 3 1/2" hull. I know you don't need it, but was just wondering how high the threshold was.

I really like the idea of the small gauge for ducks. A lighter gun is always a plus, and also when the boy gets older, we can both shoot the same gun. On;y thing that is really stopping me is the price obviously. I think I'd have to spend a lot more time shooting clays before I attempted it.

Without a doubt. My best lead #5 turkey load was around 150 hits in 10" circle at 40 yards, that is great for a lead load. My hw15 #7 with 1 5/8oz averaged 210 or better, is better when shooting in brush or grass, and has less drift in windy conditions.

Lost, I guess I'm confused, maybe because I don't reload. 28 ga shells are tiny, yet there is 1 5/16oz of shot in it, and only 1oz in the 12 guage. What makes up all that space in the 12ga shell? Why not the 28 for ducks and geese also?

TSS takes up half the space of lead, 1oz is prob overkill for waterfowl. I bet thst 28ga load is nasty.
