I took this with my Iphone yesterday. A local guy who sells live minnows to our marina with his one year old, 130 pound "Tank".
I told him if his boat broke down the dog could probably tow him home.

To me just seems like unnecessary weight to have on a dog. We already submit our dogs to so much stress on their joints training and hunting why add on all that weight on top of it.

Could be and I do not know. Just most Labs I've seen that are in the upper wrought range have too much weight on them. By all means get the dog you want, just my opinion.

I agree with you don't think other wise. If my dog now weighed over 100lbs he'd be very un-healthy and would most definitely have a shorter life span. Not something I want at all. I take better care of my dog than a lot of kids in this country get taken care of.

I think the disconnect is in the word "bigger". When I said bigger you just thought fatter. Bigger meant more height and length, ability to have more muscle. So a "bigger" lab.

Moose would be a perfect canoe lab. He's only 68lbs.

not sure how this relates to dogs, but seems bigger (taller) athlete's bodies tend to break down faster than their smaller counterparts

This might be true but my point was still valid. A 6'5" can natural carry weight more than a 5'5" man can. The claim that getting a bigger lab was automatically going to result in hurting the animal was wrong IMO.

All hunting dogs are prone to injury just like an athlete.

The bigger ones do seem to break down faster as they age, not from being overweight either.

My lab was 100#, he did look awesome and was fun to watch. Until about 8 years, when his joints started breaking down. He hunted a shitload of upland also, which is far more wear and tear on a dog. Taz is 70#, which I think is a great size. A dog that did most of its work in water should last longer, but for my needs I won't have another dog that big. But like Olly said, that big block head was badass.

Rick how big is the coyote?

He's the result of downsizing. My first two Chessies were each 96 very lean pounds, the third 73 and the coyote 66lbs. First two were fine for their time and place, mostly big spread, high volume goose hunting, but bigger ain't better in the floating marsh. In fact, one of those 96s took most mornings off in favor of a 38lb Brittany when we hunted the marsh for a season during his tenure.

I still believe finding a dog that will end with a larger frame and is in shape will even out to a smaller dog in shape but when the time comes hopefully many years from now I'll take intro consideration everything said here about larger dogs.

At 82 lbs, Brandy is a compromise of sorts olly. Shes big as far as females go but certainly no fat.

GKR's dog is over 90. He is a big boy.

I like the bigger labs, Jarbo and I have discussed this at length and he has some good thoughts against the really big ones.

48 pounds he is right at the upper limit of normal for the breed. So are his joints subject to the same loads proportionally as a 105 lb lab? Or just His regular 50ish pounds.

Was time for a fun day. Lots of retrieves in water and in field. Dropped a bumper while out workibg the field, set up a long blind retrieve to run before we left. Was pleased, his casts are getting better, would like to thank Redbeard for introducing me to the dobbs retriever training website.
