Purple stuff

This:
Six or eight drops of GV added to the clean ear.
Labs get yeast infections in their ears and this stuff cures and prevents that. I added a few drops of glycerin.

Here a link to a more completely homemade version of "purple stuff" one generally sees raves for on dog boards: http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/ears.html, the witch hazel variant being for dogs that buck at the alcohol version's sting.

I've no experience with purple stuff, but can note that plain old mineral oil does a fine job of dissolving ear wax, and if Pup has ear mites, plain mineral oil will kill them by suffocation, as they breath through their skins. Lessons learned, btw, from a vet after his official (read "expensive") ear stuff broke the patient's inner ears out in what appeared hives.

None of us hunt, we're just a bunch of duck dynasty fans that like t&a.

When you do it, it's inbreeding. But if I did it, it would be line breeding.

I had all the ingredients sitting on my table. The boric acid was a concern.
You can't buy boric acid at the pharmacy here so I found some roach killer where the active ingredient is boric acid. I thought it was 100% but when I got home and read the label...it's 88% boric acid with 12% "other" ingredients and I'm not putting "12% I dunno" into the dog's ear. The Clean Ear product is safe and I've used it. I already had some so I added a few drops of GV. It's actually cheaper to simply use the Clean Ear...it has the right stuff in it. It's meant for cleaning a dog's ears. The GV adds just the right kick so the stuff kicks azz on yeast infections.

Went to several places looking for this stuff. GV, Boric Acid powder, and Witch Hazel. When I asked the retail sales people looked at me like I was the unibomber or something. The pharmacist at Walgreen's went into great detail about why they don't sell Boric Acid anymore. Said that it was formerly used as an eye wash and it caused infections so they discontinued it's use. I didn't have the nerve to tell the guy it's also used for killing roaches. People put it in their EYES?

The long story short...I looked at the ingredients in the Clean Ear and it has what I needed and is only $5. It's $8 for a small bottle of witch hazel and I couldn't even get the other two in pure form. It's been a real challenge and thanks to Eric I got something that works quite well.

Walmart says they have it online. Try finding a store in Illinois that stocks it.
Either way....here are the results. Poor dog had it pretty bad until Eric helped.
Clean as a whistle wirh weekly treatments.
