Ellie tore a paw on a rock today. Not a terrible injury but it bled a lot and I want it to heal properly. Anybody got and specific protocols?

Clean it real good and depending in how bad it is...superglue.

Clean and wash out, disinfect with betadine, do not let dog lick, add neosporin and gauze. Let her walk on it, just no crazy running. If you are near and can keep her from licking it you can take gauze off while she is chilling. Self adhesive bandages work great for this. If bad enough superglue can work, depending on how the dog handles pain.

It's not bad. I cleaned it real well and wrapped it up. I'm going to unwrap it and superglue it later tonight. It started bleeding again when I cleaned it, so I just wrapped it until it quits bleeding. Going to try and superglue it later. Thanks guys.

I use superglue on myself. That stuff works wonders.

I do too. But paws are very important to a dog. Just wanted to make sure she got the best care I could provide.

I wasn't trying to be flippant. Seriously. It's almost impossible to keep a bandage on a dog (or horse), and superglue is just the thing, 9 times out of 10. Although if you manage to glue your thumbs into his leg hair while fixing his pad tonight, please have your better half take pictures for our amusement. Please.

Ha for sure. She made it all night without chewing it off. I used pre wrap and athletic tape. Worked well.

You may want to look into horse wrap (sometimes called VetWrap). They sell it at Tractor Supply pretty cheap. It's a "self-adhesive" type wrap (won't stick to anything but itself) that is used to wrap horses legs, both for riding and for holding on poultices and that sort of thing. The wife picked some up a while back after I got tired of trying to keep my horses foot in a 5 gallon bucket of water for 15 minutes at a time. Those things work like a charm, and would most likely work for a dog as well.

Those bandages work great, also sold at Walgreens and Wal Mart. I keep a couple rolls in the vehicle along with other supplies in case dumass does something stupid, many of the places I hunt can be many miles from a vets office.

I see taz and Ellie share the same nickname.

It seems to be a fairly common name. How is the foot this evening?

Looks good. Took the bandage off and it doesn't look as bad as thought. Put some more glue on it. She's not favoring it at all.

Cool, try to keep her from running for at least a few days, and keep her out of water, especially with the low stagnant water conditions.

The water won't be an issue, but keeping that dog from running will be impossible. I've just kept her close so she doesn't get full stride.

I understand completely, the running straight isn't the issue, it is the getting crazy and cutting hard that will rip it back open.

Might be called Coban wrap if you pick it up at walgreens or similar place. We carried it on our "ambulance box" at the last job and it's the same stuff I wrapped animals with
