Those belong in my thread. Gas station beer.

Depends on the style of beer your brewing!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivor_biasSurvivorship bias is the logical error of concentrating on the people or things that "survived" some process and inadvertently overlooking those that did not because of their lack of visibility. This can lead to false conclusions in several different ways. The survivors may be actual people, as in a medical study, or could be companies or research subjects or applicants for a job, or anything that must make it past some selection process to be considered further.

I don't think I am basing my opinion on survivorship bias. (BTW, that's a good one. I never knew it had a name, Thanks). I qualified my statement in my last post to Eric that there were lower quality beers in the best beer producing nations and I believe those beers to be superior to most average American beers and most microbrew beers. I also stated that he Southern Med countries produced mediocre beers; a little hyperbole. Both Italy and Spain have now begun to produce beers that are good and drinkable. However, they are not good enough for me to pay import prices. I'm sure there are American microbrews that make good beers. I've had some every now and then, nothing memorable though. Like I wrote before, Abita isn't bad; I just don't think it is good enough to command the price it does. Blue Moon is a decent substitute for Hoogaarden but not for only $2 less a case. That's highway robbery. Many microbrews do a fairly decent job imitating German Heffe. Penn Brewery has a fairly good Heffe but it costs just about the same as many imports from Germany that are better. If I'm going to drink a decent (and by decent I mean inferior but still not bad) substitute, I want to pay less. Sierra Nevada isn't bad either. I just wouldn't pay $33 a case for it when I can by Bass for $35.
This is where I buy my beer: http://www.savemorbeer.com/
We have to buy by the case in PA unless we buy take-out 6-packs from pizza places or restaurants, which is very expensive to do.
I like Sam Adams Ale in small doses. It's as hoppy as I can go. I'm not a fan of Sam Adams' other varieties, including their take on wheat beer. I get a wicked hangover from drinking hoppy beer. I don't know why. I even feel it after drinking only three beers. I must be allergic to hops in large quantities because I start to feel better if I take a Claritin.

I feel like my years lived in Europe, drinking thousands of different beers was for nothing when I could have just read this post. What have I done with me life?

Fuller's ESB is amazing. I don't think anyone should be allowed to go to the UK and not try it.

LOL! You beat me to it. I love that stuff but it ain't cheap. I couldn't agree more. I've never had a beer from the UK that I didn't like. I've not been there to drink their cheaper stuff but I can't imagine that isn't drinkable either based on the quality of the good stuff.
BTW, that Belhaven is the Scottish Ale variety they sell. I've not had the other Belhaven varieties. A case of Belhaven used to be in the mid $30 range. They've since jacked the price up $10 to the $40 range and got three more varieties. The bastards!

Eric Haynes wrote:Maybe the difference has been that I have been there to give most of their shitty beers a try, unknowingly. If you are just buying the good shit over the net, then it would be hard to get a bad taste in your mouth from Euro beers. Over there, they sell everything by the single bottle. Easy to fill a basket up with singles really quick and the majority sucked. The ones that stood out definitely stood alone, especially after drinking mop water right before hand.
I lived in Pisa, Italy, but took RyanAir all over Europe, along with long road trips on weekends. I think I could have bought 5 bottles a day over the time I was there, and never come close to trying %1 of what they have to offer. Unfortunately after I tried brunello, I was hooked and hardly strayed away.

I've had some rank beers in both Spain, Italy and France. I've bought some beers by the single before I knew better than to look at the date. The beer tasted like it was in the can for a century.
Your big mistake was ever trying Brunello. It can take a big chunk out if your wallet. After that, only the Super Tuscans can pass the muster but they will take you for broke. What were you doing in Pisa for three years?
