First tie the barrel on.

Next slip the insert in but carefully orient the reed where it's on top. Now every time you grab it the string lines it up and your reed is on the top without even looking.

Small Spinners, corn, and commercial dough baits like crappie nibbles is what works.
I suppose an actual trout fishing enthusiast would use a hand tied whatsit.
