Shooting cans for jerky is unethical. They are the king of ducks, not jerky.

Limits aren't set for the average Hunter....they are set for the 10% of the guys that already kill 90% of the ducks.

^^^^Truth.

FWIW, the limit on pintails in mexico is 15.

There is no limit on redheads. I know od a couple of guys that shot 200 redheads in one hunt. The birds were donated to the town to feed the poor. Mexicans don't shoot them because shells are to damn expensive for them, but are glad to let the gringos do it for them.

We shot a mixed bag of Cans, Reds, Bills, & Mallards on Sunday and we cleaned them and took them to a local Chinese restaurant.
We went back Monday night and oh my. Duck rolls. Sizzling duck. Duck fried rice. Sweet and Sour Duck. Honey Garlic Duck. I have no idea what that China lady did to them but it was awesome.

We shot 1 canvasback this year. It's in the freezer right now. Never had canvasback before, so I'm interested to see what it taste like.

Good duck or bad duck? Everyone seems to say that canvasbacks are some of the best eating.

I remember reading a menu from a Detroit restaurant circa 1915ish...a brace of mallards would set you back $1.25 and a brace of Cans were around $4.00...if that gives you any idea.

Cans that have been feeding on water celery are fine indeed. There was a whole lot more water celery back then as compared to today, and not much in the way of ag land for mallards to feed in.

We still have large areas of water celery here on the coast, and when those Cans have been here a while and are eating it-man you can tell the difference!

They are real good here until late season when availability of vegetation, (or lack thereof) makes them turn to shad, etc for a good source.

Worst year ever!!!!

Postby Woody » Sat Jan 03, 2015 12:13 am

I would like to apologize to anyone and everyone I offended yesterday, by saying that acting beyond my own beliefs was unethical. I stand by what I said other than the assertion that it is unethical and still believe that there is a line marking the unnecessary. This Is a line I have for myself based on my own emotional reasoning. It may sound sissy or gay or whatever, but I am the type that feels some sadness whenever I take a life. It is more prevalent with deer (oddly) and every time I watch a deer suffer because I did not place my shot well enough I question my own actions. I have always felt this way from the very first deer I shot, which I spine shot and watched suffer far to long before I could get a clean head shot. I still hunt regardless of this because I like the connection to nature, I want to know where my food is from, and I think it is important to know how to survive without society. For ducks it seems to be less individually based and more a population impact concern (no rational reasoning behind that, just what it is). Now for those of you who disagree with me that is your prerogative, for me it is important to have empathy even for animals as I feel that is what separate us from them. I do not want anyone to feel I am pushing my beliefs on you, only stating them for the sake of having them heard. Feel free to ignore, be insulted by, or whatever else, but understand it was only meant to be my opinion and no more.

I'm sure there are some on here that have an opinion that I should attend church every week, otherwise I am not a good Christian. I do not share this belief and am not effected by it. This does not prevent me from being thei internet friend nor does it mean I don't respect them or their opinion, only that I disagree with it.

I think if you don't feel something for the animal you kill then there is something wrong with you.
I don't think it's sadness, but more respect than anything for any animal I kill. I don't care if it's a mouse or a deer, I want the kill to be as quick as possible.

I hear that the zebra mussel is one reason for the come back of the canvasback. They switched over to use it as a food source on the migration.

@Woody-nature is one cruel Bitch. Animals eat other animals savagely on a daily basis. It is what it is. I accept that, but I do what I can to eliminate undue suffering and leave the rest for the man up stairs to sort out. I did a mercy killin on an opossum the other night, he was run over on his back and both legs were broke. He was still there by the road when I passed by 6 hours later so I pulled over and put him out of his misery. I have saved baby squirrels that fell from the nest during a hurricane. Still see one of them every now and again at my Dad's house, his tail broke and fell off when he fell out of the tree from the storm, so that is how I can I.D. the little guy.

Woody, I wouldn't say a man has to be brought to tears or riddled with guilt after ending the life of an animal, but if a person doesn't feel at least a small touch of sadness, then I believe you are just a killer who has no respect for the life you just took or the sport in it self, and have no business being granted the right to hunt. I have not seen any post on this site from any members that would lead me to believe any of you are anything other than law abiding ethical hunters.
After reading all the post and arguments on this subject I have wondered if maybe the word you may have been looking for was excessive instead of unethical. I have to admit when I have heard about numbers like that in the past, I have also felt this was excessive, but with all the points many of you brought up in defense of these many kills, I think a lot of it makes sense. I would say you are being excessive if each and everyone of those birds are not finding their way to someone's belly, and if they are just getting tossed in a ditch or left behind, then you are flat out unethical.
If given the time to hunt as much as some of you get and consistently being in the right place, I can't honestly say I would do anything different.

One day, after shooting a deer, Stan Potts is going to have a heart attack and die.
