I've been meaning to take the class for a few years now, since I've been grandfathered in here. When I started planning my elk hunt in CO a few years back, I found out I needed proof of hunter's ed for them, as well. But then I figured they have no idea what the certificate from every other state looks like, so I'd just make one up, print it out and call it good.

Short Stack needs to take it, and we had one scheduled last summer, but then that stupid hurricane rolled in on the weekend it was scheduled for. Then it was hunting season, and no time. They've got an online version you can take here, then just got for the one day field portion, but you have to be 16 to take the online course. Which makes no sense to me.

And I sometimes wonder if I'll actually be able to pass the damn thing.

JR I imagine you'd save a few bucks just getting a two day license. Even a two day license + a one day license is still cheaper than a non resi license.

Did we talk bout this already or was that mike.

Yep, when I hunted SoCal this past Christmas eve. Fortunately, I already had ODFW send me a copy of my card for Neveada. Cali asked for it because I hadn't bought a license there before. It seems they have no age cutoff like most states. I think they have a number online you can call down there and see if you need one yourself.
They want your hunter ed ID number. That's a bit of a problem because Oregon apparently doesn't put numbers on them, just the date. Anyway, the computer will not let them sell you hunting related items and it doesn't tell the POS clerk why, they just have to know. It took the guy at Walmart a bit to understand what I was trying to tell him.

I thibk you do in most places if born after a certain date.

You're right about a certain date in most states but, in Cali, the first time you buy their license you have to show proof no matter what age. It's actually only the second state that required me to show proof. Most states have a born after 70ish rule, which excludes old fuckers like me.
Oregon only requires it for under 18 at time of hunt, regardless of whether you are resident or non res. and they don't require the proof at purchase only when checked in the field usually.

Unless they recently changed it, I bought a non-resi annual license 3 years in a row and didn't have to show hunter ed. Haven't bought it the last 2 years though.

Since you have bought a license, you may have something in the Hunter ed box already and don't know it.

I think you can show them a hunting license from another state as proof, not sure though.

Edit- just looked it up, any out of state license current or within the past 2 years. Also last years non-resident license was $155. So with duck stamps you are looking at around $200 I would guess.

This is only true if the out of state licensa shows a hunter ed ID. Oregon has a place for it but they only recently started putting numbers there and mine didn't show it because of my age.

It costs $10. All you do is send $10 and a request for. Took me about 2 weeks to get mine and I knew an exact date of one of the 3 times I had taken it. It might take longer if you don't remember the exact month and year.
Go online and print the form.

I don't plan on buying the annual unless I decide to hunt lower klamath this year. I was just trying to find out what's up with the hunter ed thing, I didn't have to provide anything when I bought my past licenses.

Looking at the practice test for this communist place, I'm not so sure. 5 different kinds of safeties? WTF. There's only "off" safeties, and "on" safeties. What the hell difference does it make what they're called?

I just went through it with my two older boys, we had the option to do the online route also, but I really wanted them to sit through all of the instructor stuff as well. They put a lot of (what I thought was) "non-essential" bs in there too, but I thought it was good for them to earn the ability to hunt.

I made Sam do the same thing. Funny thing was my least favorite game warden put on the class. I about lost it laughing when he started telling war stories of the California department of fish and game..er wildlife. We know each other from work. I don't know if the stories were intended for me or the kids.

The Hunter ID class I was able to get a copy from was early 80s. I took my BIL so he could hunt(he was under 18). My BIL, wife, SIL and I all took the class. It was the best class I've seen. They had land navigation down pat. They even had all the maps for training and visual aids that showed a range where the contour lines were set out at each level. It really brought the whole topo thing in to perspective for the kids. If every class were as good as that one I'd say it would be a good idea for everyone to take it again. I haven't been to one since then. I was always working when my kids had to go and I think my Father took both of them.

From what I'm hearing, IL does something right/better than another state. I can look up my Hunter Ed ID online with my name or social. No big deal...

I think this is where something clever about tapatalk should go.

Oregon has something similar but, it started at a certain date and the rest has to be hand entered. They literally have a spot for it on your license but won't enter it for past Hunter Ed unless you complain and request.
When I took Hunter Ed(all 3 times) there were no ID numbers, just the date of completion. My copy they sent is the same.

I think somebody hosed you on this one mike. I stopped and picked up last seasons ca bird regs (forgot them at the shop though) and the way I read it hunter ed proof is one of the requested items, but there is an "or", you can instead provide a previous ca license or one within 2 years expired from any other state, province, Europe or South Africa. Or something along those lines.
Aaron, tiler or boot, one of you guys have last years regs handy to snap a pic? I think it was on page 5 or 6.

Not sure about that. They said the license thing had to do with states that show hunter ed on license. They wanted a number as proof of hunter ed and he punched in the date on my card. The hard part was convincing him he could sell me the license. He ended up calling their fish and wildlife number.
I do remember it saying it was needed if you hadn't had Cali license before. You're probably in the clear if that is the case.

Can't avoid being tracked in this shit hole state. Remember the FOID card conversation? They've already got us, might as well enjoy one benefit.

I guess I desrve that but, I was in SoCal. It's not like there are a lot of hunting fishing supply stores. Now, if you want rainbow stories and unicorn shit, they got that shit all over down there.

I would pull a page out of the Hampton Inn notebook, and scribble "South African Big Game Hunting License Valid 2012-2013. Signed, Piet Hoerbok, South African Game Warden Commissioner" And dare that fucker to say it wasn't valid. What a stupid inclusion.
