banded pelican

If only I'd of brought my genuine Foiles edition red ryder bb gun. This double banded pelican was hanging out at the crab docks, it a federal band on one leg and a blue tarsal band on the other leg. Funny thing is last summer we got a pic of a double banded seagul. Anyways the pic wasn't zoomed in enough but I think you can see it.

I have a pelican band and wing tag(not sure what they call them). I was hunting Idaho 3-4 years ago, on my birthday, when I found the carcass.
My son walked right by it and said wonder what that thing died from and then walked off. I walked over and low and behold , jewelry. I said "lookie her boy , I just got me some jewelry for my birthday." To which he said "BS". He thought I was pulling his chain until I showed it to him when we got to where we were setting up.

they band A LOT of pelicans. they stand on the washboards of the boat all the time while we're working, it's crazy how many have bands.

Here's a pic of the band and tag. I have my hand in the pic to give you an idea of the actual size of the tag that is hanging off of the wing.

So did you call it in and report it? I have no idea if they migrate or how old they can get, it could be interesting to see where it was from.

Yes, I reported it. You can actually report the ones you see that are still alive too. When you report online, there are several options for how you respond. They don't send out the certificates anymore but, you can print out the cert., if you want. The Pelican band is bigger than any of the canada goose bands I have seen.
I found the carcass in November and the bird was banded in July of the same year, if I remember correctly. I think it was banded and tagged as a juvenile. After seeing the aluminum stud that attached the tag to it's wing, made me wonder how many of these birds die because of the tag.
