That dog is a whipped pup long before season's end, but he's been a good hand. Hope to just work him for our parties from here on out, but I've been bad for relenting every season to date and having him work what didn't hit the pond for another marsh blind or two (and some days three) without dogs, as well. After six seasons of that, he's due a break. (Might oughta find us a nice ag land blind.)

But I feel for all the ones working big hunts in shoulder deep timber holes and such, too, where it's too shallow to swim and too deep to run. "Driving water" is a bear.

This dog hunts for a quiet spot to lay down. She would make one heck of a rabbit n squirrel dog until you shoot a gun.

He's two years old and i would classify him as started. 47 pounds and abput 22 inches at the shoulder.

Well he seems to be pretty smart, easily trainable, even for rookie like me. I started him on upland, as that's what the pro that was recommended toe specialized in. There reputation for being soft, he does mind training pressure, but he doea not like a loud stern voice.

Last year was his first in the blind. He made 15 retrieves. He would have likes more, but between work and poor shooting he got what I could knock down solo. He went from an easy water retrieve on a teal for his first bird, to chasing a winged bufflehead for 10 minutes in a 3 knot river.

He's happy in the field and will curl up under my feet when I sit on the couch. A great hunting buddy.

When you own a dog that will run a few hundred yards after a crippled duck, klll it, bring it back, and put it into your hand... who cares about genetics and pedigree?

Wow, should have read that before I hit send. That was awful.

Yes they have a rep for being soft. Atlas stood up well to FF and CC. But I have to use stern words and strong stares judiciously. As to how a soft it's hard to say. He's the first hunting dog I've trained.
