Lower unit gears skipping?

74 Evinrude 9.9 horse. Finally got the duck boat back out today after taking the lower unit back apart and paying attention to putting it back together. While under full throttle, it's still randomly skipping a gear. Basically going along, it all of a sudden chugs. I put new plugs in and it has fresh gas so I don't think it's anything other than the lower unit. It didn't do this last year, and this sporting I took the prop shaft out just to look at it when I changed the gear lube. I did try and hold the gear lever forward, and it stopped the skipping so I'm certain that is the cause, however that's also where I'm stuck. What do I do to fix that?

Hold the gear lever forward.

This was my thought, but running down the river/creek between lakes I prefer to stand so I can see, which means I'm already stretching to reach the motor. Maybe bungee cord the damn lever for now?

sounds like you left a bearing shim out. If you did this, it would allow the shaft to "float" too far forward and not let the gears to mesh completely and would cause a skip.

Btw, figured out what the shift dogs are, and good old Leroy in his ramblings gives a good idea to just flip it around if they are wore a little because you don't usually go full throttle in reverse, but I don't really see how to get that out without completely disassembling the whole lower unit

Yeah, it's a big job, is there any brass filings when you pull your lower gear lube drain and let a little out?

What bearing shim?

They are not always on the diagram but I guarantee that they are in there.

No filings that I saw. And I honestly don't recall any shims.

That's what I'm going to do till I figure this out, which I probably won't worry about till next summer since it's now duck season.

That whole shim thing has me thinking tho, I never took the forward most gear out of the housing because that would require taking the shifting mechanism out, but I took the shaft out, so if there was a shim between the forward gear and the bearing, I wouldn't know, nor would I know if it fell down...

they are "donut" shims.

have a boat shop in kinder la, some lower,s need shim,s some dont. check ur shift link/rod if you can hold it in gear not much wrong, bad shift dog will most time,s kick no matter what. but as with most things you can never tell . if u end up needing on hit me up i have 3 .2 are in fair shape. 1 work,s good but look,s rough as hell
