Ok, I'm biting my smart ass tongue. At least for the moment- I may change my mind before Monday.

On Fridays, all classwork and homework from the week is sent home in a folder, with a very short summary of your kid for the week, with a place for the parent to sign. This one said "Laynie did well on her work this week, but needs to pay attention to detail and follow direction better".

The irony? Half of the papers which she put in Laynie's folder were from 2 other students. I really, Really, REALLY want to sign it and write "looks like someone else needs to pay a little more attention to detail, as well, when putting the students' work in their respective folders".

Double standards piss me off.

Thats one thing that would piss me off oabout a teacher, when they would mark me down on an assignment for something we both damn well knew he/she couldn't have done any better on.

Haha! Just a little too early in the year to piss off the teacher. That would be hilarious though

After reading this thread it truely makes me cautious to put my son in public school. I cannot wait to battle the stressors of dealing with teachers. We have the option of putting him in a DOD (department of defense) school. But I'm not too sure those will be any better.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I will have a serious talk with her about it later. Her mother and I both know there are many ignorant adults out there that can't complete simple tasks and much of it can be traced back to lack of attention to detail and following simple directions at a young age.
ps, one of them must have put two other students papers in Bug's folder. "

I spent my junior and senior year of high school in a DOD school. What was worse was the local nationals hired in. I spent most of my time bored out of mind in high school.

Most kids of even moderate intelligence find themselves bored for the greater part of the day, from K-12, I suspect. Dumbing it down is so detrimental it boggles my mind. From Elementary through 9th grade, we had "sections". The sections were composed based on grades and testing the previous year, and lesson plans were taught accordingly. There was no "mixing up" to "keep it fair". Those who performed were grouped with those who performed, and those who didn't were grouped with those who didn't. But now we have punished success by rewarding "fair", and we're all going to pay the price.

Yup. From about 1st grade on, I never participated in a reading/math class with my actual class, there was a group of about 8 of us that would go to an advanced class in a separate room so we could be taught to our capability. That group actually took Pre-Algebra as 6th & 7th graders, as they didn't have the ability to teach anything more advanced than Calculus once we were seniors. Don't think that happens at our school anymore. I'm not sure whose idea it was, but when I was in the third grade, they actually made me go read to the fourth graders for their story time, that one still makes my head spin.

Same here. From 1st through 4th grade, I spent the afternoons in the next grade. I guess even back then (early 70s) the "feel good" was taking hold, as they said that they wouldn't advance a kid into the next grade, so that's what I got. Then in junior high, the grouping by ability began in earnest. I asked the oldest's teachers about that last year, and they said that they "found it better for students to be exposed to ideas from all groups, not just those who perform as they perform". What a crock of shit. I don't want my kids exposed to "dumbass", nor do I want them slowed down to expose "dumbass" to them. But that's the way it is.

Make no mistake, I'm not saying that anything other than A students are "dumbass". What I'm saying is that, generally speaking, if you mix those who don't give a shit with those who do give a shit, 9 times out of 10 you'll get an entire group who doesn't give a shit, rather than the other way around.

I agree with this by the time I hit middle school I no longer cared about school. I maintained strait As, but didn't care enough to get excited about learning anymore.

I went to my boys back to school night last night. I had his teacher explain that she does not want the kids to use thier fingers or a number line to do math. Instead she wants them to use this paper she made up that has dots on each number. 1 dot on 1, 2 dots on 2, 3 dots on 3, you get the idea. They would then start at the larger number in the math equation and find the smaller number and count forward adding the dots on the smaller number. One of the moms there asked why they couldn't use a number line. The teachers answer was that "in real life the lids won't have a number lime but will always have a number they can use to count off of". Just didn't seem right to me so I asked her " in real life won't they also have thier fingers?" She stumbled around a little before agreeing but adding they still can not use thier fingers for math. Doesn't make sence to me. I don't think me and her are going to see eye to eye on allot

When I was in the first grade, I think, we used the dot thing. As far as I'm concerned I think it helped. I remember using that for a long time but I definitely used my fingers too.

I feel your pain. These "modern educational theories" are a crock of shit, which do little more than a disservice to the kids.

The "show your work" crap started for me last week. The time I spend with Layniebug in the evenings working on the flash cards is really starting to pay off. To the point hat she reads the word problems on her homework, thinks for about 3 seconds, and knows the answer, which she writes in the blank. Not only is that not good enough, but simply writing "6+5=11" isn't good enough, either. She must also write the "doubles fact" or "making a ten" which "helped her solve it". Excuse the fuck out of me for educating my kid to look at "6+5" and KNOW that it equals 11, without using some nonsensical crutch of a "modern educational theory".

is it Pearson Mastering Chemistry? I gave the professor a 3 page review of that program using some choice verbiage on the required class assessment. I failed every homework in that class because of that shit-tastic program. they need to give people the option of taking a class with or without online homework. You end up with a skewed assessment of how well a student has mastered the material because they may or may not be able to use the fucking program, or it boots them constantly, or the answer is right but has a space in it or something fucktarded like that. it wasn't uncommon for me to spend 3 hours a day trying to figure out how to submit answers.

You should have related it to rounds in a magazine. "There are 4 mags with 5 rounds apiece..." Would have been legendary.

Didn't have a chance- that was Monday's homework. The "corrected" version which was sent home. I can picture the conversation, which had to be something along the lines of "not 5+5+5+5=20. You need to write a story about trees, not practice and solve addition".

Fucking feel-good morons.

I would start my own, very small, free private school, but the government would probably declare it a terrorist organization and shut me down via a no-knock warrant at 3 am. All because I'd teach kids the basics, teach them the history of our country, why it is great, tell them life is not fair, and that they better damn well always try for first place.
