I understand the elementary kids not being able to do anything but high schoolers doing that shit not happening. One of my teachers straight up looked at me and a friend and said "What are y'all really going to do? You have nothing to fight with." Well you see our Ag programs budget sucked ass so we routinely brought tools from home to work with. I preceded to pull out a 14" pipe wrench and my buddy pulled out a big pair of linemans. She shut the fuck up. Now we're really lucky we didn't end up in the principle's office for possession of "weapons" but I believe we proved our point that we weren't unarmed afraid schoolchildren.

No they want the child to take 2 extra steps to get to an answer that "they should just know". Making 10s would be figure out what you need to add to the bigger number to make it a "10", in this case add 2 to the 8, then subtract that amount after finished. "10 +5 = 15, now take the 2 back away to get the answer of 13".
Seems silly to do extra step. I get it, but don't necessarily like it.

See, I thought it was the other way- make it 5+5 to get the 10, then realize that 8 is 3 more than 5 (8+5 instead of 5+5), so add 3 to the 10 to get the final answer.

Either way, it's fucking stupid.
