Bad year to be an antelope buck

Postby HighDesertDuck » Tue Oct 15, 2013 12:55 pm

Just back from Wyoming and like many others here, had a great goat hunt. After two days of scouting and only seeing antelope on private farms, we found some on BLM land. 4 does, and a decent buck. it was my turn to hunt so we turned the truck around and set up the stalk from behind a ridge about a half mile away. As we climbed the ridge masking us from the herd my buddy said he thought he saw one. I put the binos on the area and could see just the prongs sticking above the grasses and sage. At this point we dropped into the high crawl for the next 200 yards. As I slowly crawled forward i kept stopping and glassing the buck. he was clearly bedded down and unaware. As i got to about a hundred yards, he sensed something wasn't right and stood up to check it out. I saw him at 100 yards staring directly at me and stopped all motion. As he glanced around i was able to get the gun on him. He stood just below the crest of the ridge and the sage was covering the lower third of his chest. It seemed like an eternity as i watched him watch me. I put the cross-hairs just above the sage and sent the round. He jumped and ran bucking about 40 yards before piling up. Great day. He was about 130 on the hoof, with horns just about 14 inches. The taxidermist said he's a good buck for the area.

this is my first buck ever, and he was harvested with my Winchester model 70 in 30-06, with 125gr federal power-point.

Thanks all. It was a great hunt. Definitely will be trying again next year. Maybe go cheap with doe tags.
