They both serve to protect the younger age class right? For fish it's to get them to spawning size and for deer it's so we can shoot bigger bucks.

They get silly with those too. In most fisheries, protecting a certain size class isn't going to do anything. People suck at fishing, and if they are damaging a fishery through hook and line, it's a pretty shitty fishery.

I have yet to see any improvement whatsoever for us. And I'm sure you're going to say it takes time but in 3-4 years the deer are no bigger than they were before this shit started.

And the only fish Regs I have problems with are slots. Those piss me off but they've about done away with all those.

You can toss a fish that isn't the right size back in the water. You can't patch up Bambi after he's been shot, and start over.

We finally got some restrictions in my part of MI. One buck has to have at least 3 on one side and your second buck has to have at least 4 on a side. This is the second year and guess what. I saw 8 different 1 1/2 bucks this year. 6 different 2 1/2 and a couple 3 1/2. Can't wait to see what upcoming years will be like. All the deer basically get 1 more year of free growth before they start getting shot.

Do they make an exception for youth hunters?

I'd be sick telling a kid he can't shoot his first deer when a fork buck walks by.

To so say nothing of the fact that it's bullshit. You bought a buck tag, not an 8 point or better tag. If people want to pass up bucks and grow big deer, start a collective movement between landowners in your area. Don't propose bullshit changes that restrict other people's chance to be successful.

Youth can shoot any deer. The dnr sent out a survey and 70% said they were for restrictions in a 12 county area.

That's 70% percent of the respondants...

If 70% of all the deer hunters supported antler restrictions, 70% of them sould be passing little bucks and it shouldn't be an issue.

On youth weekend yes.

You can also opt to by a one buck only tag that is good for any deer with antlers 3" or longer. But you only get one buck. We own 160 acres and are bordered on 2 sides by 3 landowners. About 5 years ago we all decided on a 6 or better rule. Most guys try for 8s or better the issue is it is a total of about 1000 acres of private surrounded by 10000 acres of public full of people that shoot anything that is brown and walks.

The problem with most guys is they have the feeling of "if I don't shoot it my neighbor will". As much as I don't like regulations it has definitely put a stop to the neighbors shooting the little ones. Two years ago I passed on sixteen different bucks and I know that thirteen were killed and all were 1 1/2 year old bucks. A handful of guys complain about the rule but they never complain about shooting a bigger buck. And given the choice of shooting a spike or eight point I guarantee every one would shoot the eight.

If the spike was bigger Id take it every time. I've always thought big spikes were more of a trophy anyway.

My dad just shot the biggest deer of his life off our property last week. He has been there since 1975.
Now I'm not saying it was because of APRs...but it was because of the APRs.

i'd shoot the first deer i saw, wouldn't give a damn if it had horns or not. i'm a meat hunter. i try to pass on teal because i'd rather fill my limit with bigger birds. That said, i take what's presented. if no mallards or gads are flying you bet i'll shoot 7 teal. same with deer, doe jumps out of a willow thicket and i'll lay her out. if a buck comes out first i'd shoot him. i'm not picky, as long as i have meat for the freezer.

have you ever heard of me shooting a bigger buck? The only way I'll ever shoot a bigger buck is if it walks out before the first 3 point one side buck I see

I have no problem with meat hunting. Shoot a doe or several.
Most of the does I shoot are bigger than the 1 1/2 year old bucks any way. Besides if you really weren't picky you would shoot those teal because they're all made if meat.

It's just because you're more impatient when it comes to deer than I am with ducks.
