need help finding a new deer rifle.

I'm Looking for a new deer rifle. Something people might call a "bush gun". I've all ready knocked lever actions off the list. I was thinking more along the lines of a semi auto. I currently have a 270 bolt action thats my go to big game gun. I need something that would be better for tight quarters and deer drive type deals. Also what would you guys suggest for optics? Most of my deer hunting consist of pushes threw heavy cover and I really think I would be better off picking up something more suited to that type of hunting. Any help would be appreciated.

A Thompson, cause you would look badass while spraying lead. If it were me in that situation, I might look at a Rem 7400 or 760 carbine. My dad has both and they are nice shooters.

Sometimes practicality needs to take a backseat, if you want to kickass. Definitely check out those guns, the 760 is a pump, and the 7400 is an auto. Some see through sight rings and you'd be covered.

I'm partial to bolt guns, so I'm only going to name bolt guns. If you could find one, how about a Remington 7 in .350 Remington Mag? Or a CZ rifle in 9.3x62mm? Or a Remington 700 Classic in .35 Whelen? Now if your a handloader, you can turn your .270 into a brush gun but shooting heavy bullets like the 160 gr Nosler Partition or 180 gr. Woodleigh Protected Point.

Most of my shots on deer are with in 50 yards and they are flushing. Most of the time I jump the deer off their beds. I can shoot a bolt action quick but I know for a fact if I could get on target faster and especially with the second shot. I'd of had a hell of a lot more deer hanging over the years.

This, or .300 AAC Blackout. The Remington 742/7400 is a good gun, but I wouldn't buy one without having a gunsmith look it over first. They are notorious for having parts break and you cannot get new ones from Remington (or about anywhere for that matter). The new generation of them is the 750, but I've never known anybody that owns one, so I don't know what the reviews are on them.

I didn't say you had to mess with your gun but shoot a heavier bullet and maybe a 1.5-6 power scope. I do a lot of timber hunting for elk and deer. I killed my 5 point bull with a .270 running through the timber. About 50 yards away as you said you were hunting. 160 Nosler Partitions really put the hurt on him and only took 2 shots. The .270 is a really universal caliber. You can shoot coyotes with it with 90-110 gr bullets, deer and antelope with 130-140 gr bullets, and elk, caribou, moose etc with 150-180 gr bullets.

I think you misunderstand the meaning of "brush gun". Brush guns are not shooting big heavy bullets that will "buck the brush", they are short nimble guns that handle easier in tight quarters. Sometimes you will see these paired up with calibers that shoot big, heavy bullets, but that is simply because if it is truly a brush gun, the shots are going to be at minimal ranges, so knockdown power is at a higher demand than range. A 9.3x62? Are you high? Who the hell in North America has ever recommended a 9.3x62? (RMFC, that's who) If you've ruled lever actions out, short of finding a used Ruger Carbine in .44 Mag or .357 (Good Luck!), the AR is going to be your best platform.

My Remington 700 BDL 8mm Remington Mag with a 26" barrel is a brush gun for myself. It's fast enough to shoot elk in timber hell holes. I don't care for semis and pumps becaus they make too much noise. It normally doesn't take 2 shots to kill deer if you make a good shot. I like rugged over the speed to pump lead out. That bull I shot gave me a 2 second window to put a bullet in him. The next shot was 30 second later when I caught up with him, the next shot went into his neck and he was done for.

I'm with the above on the 300aac. Especially if shots are within 50yds. Get a 220 grain bullet and you won't have to track anything. Also devastating on hogs.

The kicker is most of my shots are close. But I still do get the random chance at first light at them standing out in the open. Around 150 to 200 yards. With that factoring in. What's the best choice?

My grandpa has a semi auto Remington 30-06 that is awesome. It has see through scope rings on it. He said he used it when he used to hunt in Kansas. Perfect for tight quarter shots and long range.
