Building question

Postby Flightstopper » Fri Jan 17, 2014 8:14 pm

I'm no expert so I divert to the experts here. Is this guy not a complete idiot for cutting ceiling joist like this?? From the picture it looks like a two story house on the first level. You can see the cut joist to the left of our mounting bracket.

Picture is poor. I can't see what u mean but in general, cutting rafters and joists is not good.
Its possible that they doubled up on the one they cut or installed an "engineered" laminated beam. Without standing back and seeing the whole picture, I can't tell.

It is poor, I agree. Nope they cut the joist and hung a projection screen the to replace it. Either side of the joist that was cut is fully unsupported as far as I know.

Eh, that why houses have so many studs/joists. As long as you don't cut all of them you're good.

As long as you say "well, I gotta get a return RIGHT HERE", I think you can cut any damn thing you want. Ceiling joists, floor joists, headers, you name it.

I have seen what them HVAC or plumbing guys do to a nice framing job.
Back in the day homes were built b4 fan forced heat and OMG the chop jobs I've seen when resheeting a floor or something...have actually seen where nothing was holding up the floor but cast iron pipes that they hacked in with hatchets!

I never really cared, unless I had gone to the trouble to box in a nice chase for them in a closet or something, and then the fuckers decided they wanted to be 6" over, so just cut through the fucking header for the french doors going into the bedroom. I'm not making that up.

My biggest HVAC nightmare was a building with them metal joists. The kind with zigzag rebar running down them.
My boss said NO to soffits for the heat ducts so the guys got PISSED and pulled 6" flex duct thru 4" triangles...

The system worked until people and computers moved in. It was a chilled water AC system. I had two 250 ton Trane chillers in the factory making 35 degree water. When it started failing and women were whining my boss spent $4800 and made me install a big pump. More water going thru actually made it worse. My boss was a fucking idiot.
I still can't believe he had an engineering degree.

I was not aware of why there were problems because it was not my project. It took me two years of fiddling and calling the company that installed...
Finally a guy broke down and showed me, then said don't tell my boss or he Will chop everyone's head off to cover up the mess he made. Most miserable job I ever had.

That's when I noticed the floor was awful springy. Them dumb fuckers notched every floor joist so the ribbon would not need to be custom.
They notched 1.5" out of each joist(2x12's) so the 2x12 ribbon would fit and not need a 2x2 nailed on.

Why? To run a duct outside?

I cut a truss once. One of the web's had to go.
It was awkward. One guy was screaming just do it, the other screaming Noooooo.
After I listened to them argue an hour I said fuck it and hacked it.
The house is still there

So you're one of those guys who doesn't know what "square" means. I suspect most masons think "3-4-5" refers to the hardest numbers to get straight when taking a field sobriety test.
