Buddy, you hit it on the right day out here. You'll get 100 opportunities at bulls less then 25 yards. Boot blind right now has been a sure thing for the last few weeks. And most spots I hunt i can't keep them off me.

Well he made it back home today for the last couple days of the season as planned. Ill be putting him out with 4 mallard drakes I finished rigging up last night.
Very cool that everyone signed the bird and made some entries in the journal. Now to the contents....the hats....cool...patches....very cool. Both hats and patches will go on the wall by my carving bench. Now the last item.....The Biscuit....Im hoping something in the journal will tell the story behind it and Im considering encasing it with epoxy and hanging it also. For now its in th freezer to put a halt to the green growth starting to appear.
Im surprised that there's not at least one pellet in the head or body LOL. I do hope it served its purpose and it was enjoyed by all. I have since learned more about making this style of decoy if its intended is to be hunted and incorporated that into the mallards I just finished.
After the dust settles I will be either auctioning this traveler off or accepting offers, havent decided yet. I would gladly take suggestions. Bottom line is that whatever it brings will be donated to charities.
Thanks!

Rick,
it was awesome hunting over the deek. I have taken part in several traveling deeks over about the last 10 or more seasons. Your's was definitely the most unique in species and chosen media.
I think it would be great to have it auctioned Ebay style but, I think you should have a reserve amount so one of these cheap "A"holes here doesn't sneak in and get it too cheap.
Thanks again for the opportunity. Looking forward to next years.

QHP it was definitely my my pleasure. I really liked reading the journal. I guess I overlooked the NCH hunt thread and didnt even realize it was up the road a few hours north.
I was thinking EBay was the way to go as well.

Olly needs to put all the traveling dekes up on his mantle to show off all the crazies he's brought together!

You're welcome. What'd you need them for?

Hunting over your block inspired me to pull one of my dad's old black duck decoys, which hadn't seen water in about 30 years or so, off the shelf and hunt over it yesterday. Dad, a buddy and I shot 5 pintail and a teal over it. It was also the first real duck hunt my dad's been on in many years, so pretty great day!

That is a fine black duck decoy. Probably black cork? I'm not sure when tan high density cork started showing up but the black cork is lighter with voids. Great stuff except for the mess while carving it.
Oh and I needed the feathers as reference for some sprigs that I hope to get done this summer.

It's brown cork, I think from old refrigerators, but not sure about that. It's light and seems pretty tough, but there is about a 1/4" hole in the other side where a little chunk fell out. I think he made his heads out of bass wood.

Thanks RickC this was the first time I've participated in a traveling decoy and I would say little Red held up well although he may need therapy after being present for the NCH and WCH.

Gaddy the CWA sticker looks great on that journal. :D

Red's first morning out with his younger brothers didn't turn out bad, not great but not bad. 1 greenhead, 3 ringnecks and whiffed 2 wood ducks and let a bunch pass at the edge of my comfort range. The best one was the greenhead. He came in by himself locked up and feet down to land right between Red and one of his brothers.

Well Red is officially retired. Went this morning and only tagged a wood duck and passed on some divers. Went back on this evening but just got to enjoy a great sunset and watch mallards landing 100 yards away. So ends the 2013 - 2014 season for our traveler.

Good stuff Rick. Thanks for the opportunity to hunt over lil Red. Some great memories from the past season, even the biscuits I burned that Olly refused to eat.

It was an honor and a privilage and it shows what great members there are here. Red was experimental just like a rig of teal I put out at the beginning of the season. A few changes in construction and the listing problem has been solved. I appreciate all the hunters putting with a leaky dekes lol.
Im looking forward to making next years.
