Many times bullets will be "upset" early in flight, spinning somewhat irregularly around its axis before settling in to its flight path.

Think about a top that spins somewhat wildly until it sheds some initial speed then settles into a smooth spin, until it slows enough that it starts wobbling and falls.
Same thing with a bullet and the reason why max loads rarely produce the most accurate loads in any given caliber.

However - in practice the amount of initial "wobble" in a bullet is fairly small And there is no way that a gun would be shooting a "basketball" sized groups at 100 and MOA at 300.

Just not possible. The name of the game is consistency - 100-200-300-1000, doesn't matter - the bullet has to be doing exactly the same thing every time in order to produce small groups at any range.

Dan, thank you for explaining it better than I can.

This is probably the dumbest thing I've read in a while. Just sayin.

I was thinking the same thing. Never heard of a sidewinder bullet that consistently hits as 300 yards. Would be good for shooting around trees.

if its dead on at 3 then it has to deader oner at 1 and 2!

And X2!

Depends on the type of bullet your shooting and the rate of twist in your barrel. That's why I say you can have a hell of a load at 3000 that won't group inside a diameter of a basketball at 100.

Quit while your behind. I know nothing about ballistics and know that's a load of shit. A bullet can't be off 6" and 100 yards and dead in at 300.

I'm talking about shooting groups not precision shooting.

Me too. If a bullet has a 1" group at 300 yards it will have <1" group at 100 yards. That's just common seance. Bullets don't spin in circles they magically find the spot at 300 yards.

So your telling me that if a 5 bullets group into 1" at 100 that it'll do that at 500? Or 1000? Hell no.

No. I'm telling you the opposite. If they group 1" at 500, then they will group better than 1" at 100.

Not necessarily. Take a boat tail bullet for example like a scenar. Sometimes it won't have stabilized enough to fly "straight" so to speak so at 100 it might be flying crooked. That can make a 3-4 inch group or more. Now it gets too about 250, half it's way to 500, and it starts stabilizing completely, flying "straight", and when it reaches 500, it puts 3 into 3.5", get what I'm saying?

That makes no sense. If a bullet is unstable it will start tracking off and will stay off once it gets on out there.

Nope. One bullet will go 4" left then realize it's off and get back on track. While his buddy is 6" high and does the same. Never heard of these new bullets?

Negative. But I have shot one of these...

They're delicious.

You haters need to stop it. I believe you Rex. I have a rifle that couldn't put a group on the side on a barn at 100 yards, but at 1500 yards it's dialed in. Can't hit an elephant at 100 but I can circumcise a gnat at 1500.

I also have shot a unicorn and I concur, it is delicious.

Rex, how does the bullet "get back on track?"

Is it a heat seeker?

You ever heard of, a little adjustment here makes a huge difference down there? If it is of by 6 inches a 100 it will be off by like 18 at 300.

I've heard the unstable bullet deal before, too. But awkward in terms of bullet weight coupled with twist, i.e. a 100 grain bullet with stabilize better from a 1:7 vs a 1:10, or something. What I've never heard of is an improper weight/twist combination being used for greater accuracy down range.

Lets say your shooting a 6mm caliber gun with a barrel that had a 1:7" twist. Correct me if I'm wrong but let's say your shooting a short, stubby 62 gr varmint bullet. What can happen is the fast twist rate can over stabilize these bullets an send them flying awkward and crooked. That's one reason why the .243 Winchester was more popular than the 6mm (.244) Remington. The .243 had a 1:10" twist barrel that could stabilize the heavier 100 gr slugs, where the 6mm began life with a 1:12" twist. That rate of twist had trouble stabilizing the 90-100 gr slugs. When Remington redid the 6mm, it came with a 1:9" barrel. This could stabilize heavier bullets now but it was too late. Ballistically the 6mm Remington is superior to the .243 but its not enough too notice a different on game.

While you are right here, this speaks nothing towards your claim that a factory rifle can shoot a 1/2" group at 300 yards. That alone is nothing short of asinine, disregard the fact that you are saying that a gun capable of such shots, couldn't group inside of a basketball at 100. To quote D-12: Bitch, are you retarded?

The point is Rex, those bullets in those scenarios NEVER group well at 300 yards after being wildly rotating at 100.

Your theory as to why your rifle shoots basketball sized groups at 100 and sub MOA at 300 is shit.

Yes bullets wobble, but they have to wobble EXACTLY THE SAME EVERY TIME in order to hit consistently, at any range. It's not physically possible for a bullet to correct its flight path.

Well guess what, kids with hearing aids don't have the best of luck. I've also seen what alcohol does to people. It's not for me. Every single day, I come home to my mother, who is a flat out alcoholic. Drunk 24/7. And guess what. She wouldn't be a alcoholic if another alcoholic hadn't hit a car load with high school kids and one of her children died along with 4 of her best friends.

Are you saying you were smarter than me at 16? If you say yes, your full shit. I'm not the sharpest knife in the box but definately not the dullest either. You need to go butt fuck yourself with a sharp stick.

I was too busy getting pussy and getting fucked up when I was your age, but yeah I was smarter. Without a doubt.

There is more to get fucked up with than alcohol, just saying. Sorry to hear the story and for your loss. Not trying to be a dick, but just because some shit happened in your life doesn't mean you have to be a little prick. I realize that I'm a smart ass and probably get on your nerves, but everyone has been or will go through some shit at one point or another. It's how well you respond to it that makes you what you are. The real world is full of shit that happens, get used it would be the best advice anyone could give you. Sucks for your mom, I couldn't possibly imagine what it'd be like to loose a child, as I have no children. My condolences to her. That said death is just as much a part of life as living, embrace it because it will happen to you, me and everyone. Nobody comes from a pefect home or circumstances, some are more broken than others and some may not be as much to one as it is to another but it is all relative. Point is; it's your life, take control of how it turns out, own it and be responsible for yourself and yours. I seriously hope you don't take this the wrong way because it isn't meant in anyway but to help you.

I'm guessing you've never been in a deep state of depression and mentally sick to the point of blasting your head off. I was a god damn wreck. It's really fuckin' hard to get out of mental issues especially when your suicidal and sick. I was really lucky to get out of where I was a few years ago. Most of the time people with mental troubles end up killin themselves. I had enough sanity to see how much of a coward I would be if I were to do it, how I would only be hurting the people in my life, not myself. I seen how selfish I would be. I'm glad you took the time to type that post up. It shows your not a dick 24/7.

Don't take this the wrong way, but what does that fucking matter? Don't get me wrong, that's terrible what happened to your family but it means jack shit in the scheme of things. You are using that as a crutch and a defense mechanism and it's bullshit. I can say without a doubt that I was smarter than you when I was 16, because I knew god damn well that there wasn't anything that I thought I knew more than adults. You step some fine lines here and get away with it because it's the interwebz, I only pray that if you are as smart as you think you are you don't act like this in real life.

I'll agree I've crossed some lines but ou know what I always didnsnd still do? I send the user a PM with my apology. You can ask a handful of people on here. They can confirm it. I'll admit it, I'm an asshole. Period. Dumbass? That's so-so. Somedays are different than others. You all were 16 once yourselves. I'll grow out of the phase.
