Got it.

Ki's had the e-collar on twice. Once at a snake aversion clinic, and once during his first few days of upland hunting where we were kicking deer out of the ditches like rabbits and he couldn't help but run them. He ran two with the collar on and hasn't flinched at one since. I may have to do the same thing for nutria, unless someone can enlighten me to a different path.

Also, I didn't mean to pick open any old scabs with this thread, but I do appreciate the exchange of different ideas. Everyone I talk to says of course you have to FF a dog to have a reliable retriever, and they typically snicker and say "well you can borrow mine when you're ready" when I tell them I'm staying off the e-collar. Of course their dogs don't handle for shit without the collar on, either.

There are many ways to reach a desired goal. If yoy are following a program, stay with ittil the end. Don't get ahead of yourself and only proceed when each step is finished. Time and patience are key.

Jarbo is right. I saw a lot of pro trainers this weekend at Pheasant Fest. Many use similar programs, but the one constant message was to finish each step completely, and don't skip steps no matter what program you're using.

I've met lots of guys that feel they don't need to FF a dog because it goes and get's the duck most of the time. I was simply saying that because of whatever reason they aren't taking that important step in training it's causing them to miss out on how much better their dog could be (at retrieving).

not butt hurt Boss, i have FF and CC when needed. i have had more that didnt need it.
you guys are training a dog to go pick something up for you and bring it back. i will not feed a dog that will not do what its supposed to do. way more time goes into my working dogs then my labs. never had to FF a working dog in m life
