X2. That kid wasted more time trying to piss the teacher off than it would have to do it right. Much respect.

Ok, update. I've tried not to bitch for while, but it's time again.

Lately, the math homework has been inches/feet/yards. Fine, that's good useful stuff. HOWEVER. The homework has involved things like "The sidewalk in front of Amenaisha's house is 96" long. How many feet is it?", or "Bill is 72" tall. How many yards is that?" Well, that's division, and these kids don't even have a grasp on addition and subtraction beyond the basics. So I had finally had enough, and wrote a letter fort he teacher on Tuesday, asking just what the hell sort of teaching method is this. I was actually pretty tactful, as I know she isn't the one who develops the curriculum.

She just called me, and we had a talk. She said that "I know that you were taught how to do problems like those as division, but we are teaching them as addition." I asked how. She said "They have been taught to skip count, for example by tens to one hundred." To which I replied, "That has nothing to do with the homework being given, unless you've taught them how to 'skip count' by twelves, which I doubt." She said no, they hadn't, but the way it is being taught is "the students know that 1 foot is 12 inches, so we want them to critically think, that 1 foot is 12 inches, 2 feet is 24 inches, and so on until they get to 96". I then lost my tactfulness, and said that that was almost the dumbest thing I'd ever heard. She did have the decency to say that "most students don't get it, and you're not the first to voice a concern to me about this." But then she pissed me off by saying "but it's ok, because we'll be finished with this tomorrow, and then we'll move on to meters and centimeters, which most students find easier." Ok, so since they don't get it, don't understand it, and are lost, just moving on to something else is a good solution. WTF. I asked when they were going to practice things like "54-38", to wwhich she replied that they had "touched on subtraction with borrowing earlier in the year." Luckily for me I had done my homework, and told her that "touched on it" means a total of 4 worksheets with a grand total of 32 problems of this type. That's it. In her entire school career to this point, Layniebug has done 32 subtraction problems involving borrowing, and that's good enough for them. I am sooooooooooo disgusted right now.

Holy shit.
Next she'll be wanting them to convert inches to centimeters real quick in their heads by counting by two and a halfs. ...

She's just a minion, incapable of independent thought. The teacher last year deserved a swift kick in the snatch, but this one appears to just be trying to ride out a fucked up system until retirement, which I can understand.

How long before they are doing math problems like "the state gives you 40 credits for food a month. If apples are 2, oranges are 3, bread is 5, and milk is 7, how many children can you bear and still get by without social services taking then away?"

School Venting Begins

Postby assateague » Thu Apr 03, 2014 5:59 am

Haven't posted in this one in a while. Not for any shortage of material though. My disgust had just reached the point where I ignored it, believe it or not.

But this one got me. Why teach them to be imprecise? It's math. I'm struggling with having her write "Get back to me when you have the info, and I'll solve it" or not. You have to solve 600-350 anyway, and then when they do that, they're going to think the answer isn't "correct", they're going to think the answer is "close". It's stupid. Just give them a bunch of problems. They will figure that "about" shit out. Trying to teach imprecision pisses me off. It's not teaching estimating, because you have to solve it any damn way, especially when they phrase the answer as an absolute. Should the last sentence not start with "about"? Of course it should, if they're going to go down this path. Don't know why this irritates me so much, but it does.

And the second one is just confusing. Why give them such confusing problems? Just irritating.

Damn that's dumb.

The answer to number two is "thee are several possible combinations to make 125 with 2 colors"

I was skeptical about some of the math methods, (counting 10'a, ect.), but I've got a 7 year old that can now add multiple 3 & 4 digit numbers in his head - which I know for certain is beyond what I could do at that age.

Ok, now I'm even more pissed. I thought I was pissed off, until I read the "instructions" on the front of the homework sheet. Now I'm really mad.

The don't teach this as a subtraction problem, they teach it as a series of wild-assed guesses. This isn't teaching, this is bush league bullshit nonsense.

Here's the example problem:

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1396524917.414542.jpg

And here's how they "teach" you to solve these types of problems:

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1396524950.134763.jpg

How do they expect you to have even a fucking clue as to what number to "guess"? They seem to pull one at random. How about this: "subtract the known number from the total to get your answer"?

Motherfucker, this kind if nonsensical, detrimental thinking irritates me.

The correct answer to one is...
"Since I did not go see the pos movie on Saturday or Sunday I don't know that 350 went on Saturday...are you lying to me?

Ok...AT that is not a math problem. The instructions were to underline what you know and circle what you need to find out.
Its not about math. You can tell because the numbers don't add up.

The teacher suckered you into proving you can't follow simple instructions. The exercise was about that, not mathematics. Ha!

Dan, it's second grade.

The math part is flawed and not solvable.
600-350=250
250 is not greater than 350
Start putting in 351,352 etc and test the theory.

I would have underlined what I know, circled what I need to find out. Put a question mark in the place where the solution goes and that is the correct answer. The second one is easy too.
Will let you solve it. (Its easy)
