But we have good luck running these with a chicken leg inside and casting them with a salmon rod. Seem to be able to cast them farther out than the people throwing by hand and usually bring in more legal size crab.

That is one hell of a contraption.

Its actually really simple. Spring open, closes when you reel up and stays closed as long as you dont let the line go slack.

That casting contraption is pretty wild. See some folks here using the drop nets similar to the type you have there, but mostly rich city types. Seems to me like a lot of crabs must bail out of them on the way up. Me, I'd just as soon eat something else until Sweet Chereau takes a fit to go fish them or SIL drops off a box.

They cant really bail out because the net gets about a foot deep when you retrieve it. The casting ones work well too because they close as long as they have steady pressure from the rod/line.
With the casting ones I've brought in as many as 2 dozen small (under legal) size crabs at once before.
