What does sohcahtoa mean to you Rex?

Montana's greatest Indian chief? no

Soh-SIne-Opposite/Hypotenuse

Cah-CoSine-Adjacent/Hypotenuse

Toa-Tangent-Opposite/Adjacent

It's really that simple. Trig is a piece of cake if you got that and the ratios down.

More or less but you don't need all that. It's really pretty simple.

You should have no problem figuring out some simple trig to prove how easy it is for you.

A ship departs and travels 60 miles due east, then adjusts its course 15 degrees northward and continues for an additional 80 miles.
How far has the ship traveled from it's point of departure?

Should be easy since trig is so simple for you.

Hint: you will need "the law of Cosines"

I got 131.5 but it's been 3 years since I looked at a trig book.

It's been 30 years since I looked at a trig book. Know how many times I've used it since then? None. That should tell you something.

They told me it was necessary for building roofs. Or maybe that was geometry in general.

Graduated in 2000. It's been 14 years for me.
You missed. It's NOT easy.

b^2 = a^2 + c^2 -2ac cos B = 80^2 + 60^2 -2(80)(60) cos 165 degrees

solve for b

I have the book sitting here so have a huge advantage.
It was fun, thanks for playing.

You got me to laugh. Thanks

Shall reward you with a God Bless Texas.

The solution is approximately 138.8 miles (four sig figs)

always include the units.

I've never used anything besides simple geometry, and use that quite a bit. THAT should be something people have to take at least two semesters of, simply because it's useful.

It's a prerequisite for the building trades classes I took in HS.
Six-Eight-Ten is geometry.
