Gutting deer

Postby ducks~n~bucks » Sun Apr 27, 2014 1:12 am

I have a question, just to see how many people do what. Do you guys gut the deer where they lay after you shoot them, or load them in the truck and do it later? I am asking this because I see a lot of picture of guys with deer in the backs of their trucks that aren't gutted yet, but I've always seen them gutted where they lay in person.

We skin and butcher deer in the spot too usually, unless it's a mile or less to walk out.

I don't see why you would ever carry guts out.

Place I hunt is small. I dont like leaving the guts right on thr trails the deer use everyday. I take them out of the field and gut them at the barn. Keep the heart and liver and throw the guts in a ditch near by.

On our land, we just gut on the spot. Haven't tagged one on pubic to know, but I think you get in trouble for leaving them

Right where they lay. The gut pile will be completely gone in 24 hours or less, and other deer don't care a bit.

This. I have a spot where predators visit all season long. I feed them at the same place every time. They ate 200 snow carcasses in less than a week.

Have only shot two deer in my life but both were very near a ditch. Pulled carcass over to incline, gutted my deer and let the guts simply roll into the creek. I lay a tarp out first. Then I use some ditch water to give a quick rinse and wash my hands. Wrap up the deer and drag the tarp.
I thought everyone did this.
With mammals, get the guts out ASAP. The meat will taste better if you do.

If they are back in the woods or it's really warm gut them where they lay. We prefer to drop them in the fields and drive to them, load em up whole and gut after skinning in the garage. It's a whole lot cleaner.

Not only do I gut them on the spot, I try to gut them within 10 minutes of being shot, otherwise they bloat up. I don't worry about skinning unless we're quartering an elk. Normally we get deer at least 2 miles back but just drag them. Not that big of a problem.

Gut them where they lay. Then deploy claymores for the wolves and scavenging indians.

Got them right on the spot. If they are on a deer run I'll drag em 10 yards but that's it.

Gut on the spot. Come back later with AR and spotlight. Shoot coyotes.

I've done both but most of the time I drag it off to the truck and gut it there. Don't want to gut em right in front of the stand.

Why are people so worried about gut piles where the deer are? I've seen a gut pile one day, came back the next and there was another gut pile next to it. I don't think the deer care. I could be wrong though.

We leave the antelope gut piles where they lie. Drive past one last year less than 24 hours later. Antelope were grazing in the area. I don't think they care.

It usually depends on where it dies for me. If it's in the middle of my property or by a good stand I'll drag it to the edge of the property and do it there. But I never bring them back to my house to gut.
