Every ones palate is different I suppose. Its not just spoonies to me. I love eating Gaddys put I've had the same experience.

I'm among those here who won't knowingly shoot a brackish marsh gray. Maybe just a "bad" one, maybe...

Meh. I dont hunt brackish water much at all. Still i get a goof ball gaddy mixed in the bunch every now and then up here. Some ducks ive killed down in bay delta area regardless of type have an off putting or different taste to them. And early season birds can be down right nasty. Before the rains and cool weather freshen up the marsh some. But I know guys that say they can't tell the difference. So what the hell do I know.

Name for wigeon I picked up from one of my dad's buddies, not sure if anyone else uses it in the history of ever because he has disabilities, plural.

He probably has major liver damage from his younger days hanging around with my dad, and might have brain damage from long term smoke inhalation. (He is a firefighter.)

Most of you fellas probably won't agree but when the bay is full of mile long rafts of broadbill, there is nothing like a layout hunt for them. When you are lying at the water's surface in the middle of the decoys and 300-400 acrobatic birds are trying to land right on top of you it's a blast. You can hear the wind in their feathers and their weaving, sideways slipsliding final approach is something to see. Tricky shooting but lots of fun.

Goldeneye are probably my favorite.

I think I've been clear on this subject in the past, GE are my bird. However, anything diver or seaduck is my preference.



Of course, when they let you shoot 7 Broadbills a day, you gotsta switch gears for that season, fo' sho'.

Wood ducks are my favorite, but I don't discriminate at shooting at anything usually.

Do you see any fully plumed woodies up your way?

Oh yea, I just can't hit them. Might be the only pretty puddle duck we see outside the mallard. The rest take off south before they fully plume out it seems.

The wood ducks are pretty when they are this far north, but if I am not mistaken most (or all) of them are not fully plumed.
They are even prettier when they reach the south.

I'd agree with Rick that preparation has more to do with it than anything.

I once made poppers with Merg, BB, Squaw, Mallard, Wood Duck and Goose....

And no one ever guessed they were nomming mergs and Squaw.

Before my brother kills a beef cow for himself he always "finishes" the animal with a diet of grains for a few weeks before slaughter. He claims it makes a big difference in meat quality.
When we shoot local Brant that have been feeding next to the geese in fields of winter rye for a while there is sometimes a notable difference in their meat that's much more pleasant than new arrival brant.
I think might be something to the theory of what a birds been feeding on directly affects their meats palatability......but not always.

Agreed. Not sure what it is that makes a duck or goose cooked past medium rare taste like liver but at med rare it's as fine as any steak out there and just as tender too.

Pretty sure it's all the blood needed to oxygenate the breast muscles during flight, because domestic ducks aren't livery and the whistling ducks that hardly fly by comparison to other wild ducks are more like domestic duck than others.
