They are my favorite bird to eat and gun.

I breast em out and grill, very good.

I get one every now and then in WI, but we can always count on swarms of ringers when I hunt Kansas. Between the sporty shooting and fine table fare, I'm glad for it.

Don't get many up here by me, might see them around for a week or two. They are fun shooting.

The what's for dinner thread!

Postby gila-river » Tue Jun 17, 2014 10:48 pm

The best hunt of my life was ringnecks. Caught a true migration day. They were thick. Coulda stood on top of the blind in an orange jumpsuit and they still woulda dumped in. Had a limit of drakes in no time.

They're often called "butterballs" down here, and one fellow who guides with us claims his mother wouldn't let them bring any other duck home.

They are only here for a short while with the woo dies but I usually hammer them while they are around. Butterballs are buddies here.
Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

I like hearing different slang for waterfowling from around the country. Back home we called Buffelheads butterballs and sometimes called ringnecks Blackjacks.

Cormorants have their own special appellation as well.

Bufflehead are next to nonexistent here, and I'm told the ringneck got its "butterball" name from its appearance when plucked. Others here, self included, call them "blackjacks" or, more often, simply "jacks".

Scaup are "do gris" ("gray back," or more literally "back gray") here in the land of folks who talk funny.

Rick, what is the translation of "pol deaux"?
I'm sure I spelled it wrong.

I thought "do gris" is what people from the U.P spray on their boots before they go deer hunting.

It's spelled "poule d'eau:" and means "chicken of water" in literal French and "water chicken," as it's understood in English.

Then you ought to have the decency to call scaup "blue bills," "broad bills," just plain "bills" or "black heads" and not defile the blackjack's good name.

So what do y'all a blackjack? Coots have unique name around here too, very similar to cormorants.

Jacks be ringnecks here. (And "ringnecks" be Canadas.)
