Nebraska Weather

Postby sws002 » Thu Jun 19, 2014 10:19 am

Even though it has already been established that Michigan is the most unpredictable weather, I figured I'd share this for those who haven't heard my mention of it or seen it on the news recently. Nebraska, SD and Iowa have just been getting pummeled with severe weather recently. Last week we had three MAJOR hail storms come through and drop baseball to softball size hail with 70-80 mph winds across the state. This week has been absolutely devastating as there have been multiple storms that produced multiple tornadoes. Monday night it started in Pilger, NE, as they had not one, but two VERY large tornadoes rip through their small community, one taking a direct path through the center of town. Tuesday night another storm dropped two (and reports say possibly three) tornadoes near Coleridge NE, just about an hour north of Monday's storms. There were also two other tornadoes reported across northern Nebraska Tuesday night and I believe into SD. Last night, South Dakota got into the mix and I believe had a tornado come through a small town (although I don't know the name) up there. I'll post a few links and videos, but please send your prayers to the families affected.

Gotta love May and June on the plains. Amount of devastation these storms can do is unreal, seen the damage too many times. Keep your head down brother, prayers to those affected.

Ya, to top it all off, Missouri river is at flood stage, as of yesterday was expected to rise 10 ft by Sunday. People in SD and NW Iowa are trapped in their houses. Sad stuff, we've been EXTREMELY lucky and have missed all but the rain and winds. If you drive about 15-20 miles Northeast of my house, it starts to look like someone took an Uzi to people's houses. Baseball size hail and 80 mph winds absolutely shredded the area immediately North/Northeast of Omaha.

The craziest part about it is the actual storms that produced these tornadoes. Literally completely localized, just a dime-size or smaller red dot on the radar map. One of the guys from Pilger went viral with this quote: "It was like God dragged two fingernails across the land". I'll have to see if I can find a screenshot of the radar maps at the time of the storms.

Here is the radar map from Pilger (I'm still looking for the one at Coleridge, it's even smaller). From Wisner to Winside is probably about 20 miles at best as the crow flies, and that was the ONLY storm on the radar at the time.

Dammit man, that is some bad stuff SWS, and hope that is the end of it! Cannot fathom the damage that baseball and softball size hail can inflict  Prayers sent for those affected.

It fucks shit up. A few years ago a big storm went through where I pheasant hunt, there were several deer dead along the roads from hail, no place in that area for them to hide.

Would definitely suck. Landowners found a 190+" mule deer in their wheat field while cutting, said was prob 375#. Big animal to be killed by hail.

Didn't see pics, not sure if it was already that big, or a deer they had been watching, they shoot monsters every year. I have seen a few with decent antlers during spring turkey out there, at the same time, whitetails don't have anything in my area.

Outside of not wanting anyone to be injured, I don't really feel bad for people who suffer property damage from hurricanes or floods, but there's something about tornados that just makes me ache for the people that live in their way. That and landslides. Prayers sent for all you flatlanders.

Isn't that the same idea of living in an area that have tornados every year? So the people living in the areas destroyed by the tornados where asking for it since the region is pron to tornado activity? Its the same to me. All sucks but the same.

I don't see them as being the same. You know when you're in a flood plain, or a place that gets whomped by a category 4 every 25 years. It's not a possibility, sooner or later it's going to happen. Not so with tornadoes.

It's like living on a fault line, and being pissed when an earth quake destroys your house. Hurricanes are going to hit Florida, you should be prepared. Rivers are going to flood, don't put your house right on the bank. Tornadoes happen sporadically and randomly. There is no geographic definition to them that you could build your home out of harms way from them.

Yeah then you hear the story about the guy that's been hit multiple times by tornados and keeps rebuilding. With that terminology the Sacramento valley on a whole shouldn't have homes built in it.

Couldn't get close enough to get much for pictures as the State Patrol and National Guard had the town closed off, but this is the best we could do for pictures, and they still don't do it justice. The amount of devastation is almost unfathomable.
