So the wood is the cheap part huh?

Yeah, the wood is only $5 a sheet, and I'll use about 4 for this one. It would be more if I had to buy a half sheet of plywood or something for the transom, but I've got that crap laying around. Only need the luaun.

Red, this one's going to be 10'6", with a dog deck on the back, same size cockpit, and maybe pods. Haven't made up my mind yet, and will probably just wing it as I go.

I winged my KARA and it turned out great. A little too big though. I made the cockpit the size of my layout blind so I could be lazy and just hunt out of that, rather than worry about blind material on the boat itself.

I just went to Lowes and bought the Bondo Fiberglass resin and hardener for cheaper than what US composites had it listed as. It's been 3 years now and holding strong. I talked to a guy who builds fiberglass boats for a living and he told me to use fiberglass mat next time over the cloth.

I don't like the mat because it soaks up so much resin, and that shit gets heavy. Mine is only 4oz cloth with poly resin, and is 3 years old, no cracks at all yet. The marine grade poly reson is $125 for a 5 gallon bucket, which is probably 2 gallons more than I'll need, but I'm using 7oz cloth this time, and I tend to make a mess, so am getting the big tub.

Have you ever seen any of guywithhat's projects over on DHC?

He told me to use a base coat of resin, then a thin coat w/ the mats, and that is all. Supposedly, the thicker the resin is, the more brittle it gets. Thinner and it will flex easily without cracking.

It's probably unnecessary, since I always hunt tied up to a tump, and it's my intention to have Dutch next to me on the land, but that one time when I hunt away from any land, I'll be kicking myself if I don't have a place for him.

You're boat is gonna be heavy as a motherfucker at 10'6". You'd better get a trailer and a winch.

I have a trailer I use for this one, and I only have to carry/drag it at one spot where I hunt, about 20% of the time. If I can get a decent motor for this one, I'll be able to put in at a ramp a few miles away, but just never wanted to do that with this small motor, because it'd take me forever to get there, so I drag it over the rip rap. I may be able to do that with this one, but it'll be sketchy I think.

I love layout hunting. To bad I don't do it very often anymore.

Believe it or not, we didn't use our layouts once last year in NoDak. Weather was nice enough we were able to lay in whites the entire trip. We've come across a few spots with permanent blinds/pits that we hunt, so we are down to about 50/50, use to be about 90% of our hunts were from layouts. Tell you one thing, anybody who thinks gloves are for bitches should try grassing blinds 2-3 times a day for a week straight without them. Shit will wreck you.

Wearing whites for snows is fun too. Layouts are nice for protection from the wind during a good mid afternoon nap. If you stubble the blinds properly, the birds will never know you are there.
