Heart breaking decision...

Postby R. Chapman » Tue Jul 01, 2014 2:01 pm

It has come time for my dog, Charlie. He only has a few more days left in him. He can't move now and every time I see him he is looking worse and worse. Right now, I'm trying to decide whether to put him down or let him be. Really sucks. :(

Sorry to hear, and never easy Rex, but when there is no more quality of life for the hound, do him a favor and put him down. One word of caution, don't make the mistake I made when they asked if I wanted to be in the room when they put my Golden Retriever down. Hard enough to accept putting them down to begin with, but watching them slip away, even though it appears painless, is pretty damn emotional. Good Luck Buddy!

Sorry to hear it Ron. Seems like there's been a rash of them lately. Nothing much tougher in life to deal with, other than the obvious. Only you know the best thing. Guess you have to think if it was you what would you want done. I don't think dogs fear death, though. Good luck, man.

I hear ya Delta, it is emotional. But personally, I couldn't handle not being there. Just what you feel best with, I guess.

That sucks Rex and it's something we all will have to face one day. Remember that if he's in pain and his quality of life is so bad that he can't move you'll be showing him more love by giving him peace than keeping him around for a little longer.

A lot of heart breaking threads on here from time to time but you're in my prayers bro, shit like this is tough.

I agree, I already know that when the time comes I will do it myself. Not with a gun like in old yeller but in the vets office I will be the one to end it not someone else.

Really sorry to hear this Rex. Will keep you in our thoughts and prayers for sure.
Like others have said, it's a tough decision to do it and to know when to. Just realize you're doing it for him. Try to remember the good times with your buddy, not this day.

Sorry to hear Rex, this shit sucks. I went through it in 2010 and 2011, back to back years was tough, but definitely the right thing to do.

I took tonight off at work and took him up to the old rabbit spot we used to hunt when I was a kid. It hurt but he's in a better place now.

Gotta say Rex, you're a bigger man than I tonight. I would still be crying and blubbering like a schoolgirl. Prayers man.

I've owned a lot of dogs over the decades and its never ever easy to put one down but even harder to watch them suffer. You did good, cherish the memories.

Sorry for your heartbreak, Rex. You did the right thing. I'm sure you'll still find lots to smile about when you think of the good times you had. And it's nice you'll be able to visit him in a place that meant so much to you both.
