Yes , it's awesome until the blades come out and you're standing there hoping one doesn't land in your back !
It can get pretty bloody in a short time with all that money floating around.....or when the cops come !

I was a third generation Game Bird guy.
My dad knew all the old timers most of them gone now.
Randell Berkey who made gaffs and had a supply comp.
As well as the locals who have passed away , Gene Clay , Chuck Elas , Clark Holder , Jr Strange , Gene Justice
I still know many of the Guys who are our age who I won't mention.
I stayed in it until the early 80's and they raided a big derby in mariposa after that with kids and a business and church I said who's needs it.
They took a sport of kings and presidents and made it a criminal offense.
I remember reading Abraham Lincoln who wrote as long as men are willing to fight and defend to ground they call their own I see no reason Game Roosters should not be able to do the same.
But that was before someone else's dislike of the blood sports meant you lost your freedom to participate in them as well.

Those are old friends of mine still to this day and the stories are all good......to some !
Do you remember Roberto ? The guy with the 10 carrot ring of diamonds that looked like a Rooster ?
He was my inside man !

One of my wife's school board members stated that there had to be a way to get the Mexican kids interested in 4-H and FFA. My wife told me and as I was headed to Nor Cal anyway I visited one of my former neighbors and brought back several copies of "Grit and Steel" and a couple of trios of Kelso's and Radio Kelso's for the Mexican kids to raise. To win a prize at the county fair you need only three animals of a breed so it was almost a sure thing. There were over 20 young Mexican boys with their fathers or uncles or older brothers in line for the "chickens".

The next day we were invited to another school board members house for dinner. The school board members husband was a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge and as my wife and one of her bosses were puttering around, the Judge invited me into his study for a drink and told me that Game Fowl was against the law. I told him that it was my understanding that raising them was legal but fighting them was against the law. He looked it up and admitted that I was right. Judges don't like to be wrong, dinner was quiet but polite. The school board member that wanted the Mexican kids involved just about had a heart attack with the interest and response generated by the chickens. Alas, the Judge got to the school board member about setting an example and so forth and within three days there was once again no Mexican interest in 4-H or FFA. Sad to see $3,000 worth of chickens let go in the river bottom.

That's a fact Ron , in these parts farming / Dairies hire a lot of Mexicans . Along with this hired help , they have Chickens !
Most are tethered-up alongside 1/2 of plastic drum ( for a house ) , these are Game chickens not necessarily for eating and
there're some Bad JOSE's ( money makers )in the bunch , some come from Arkansas in a shell with great hopes they won't
be for dinner after they grow-up ! But , if they don't turnout to be a JOSE , they are really tender.....
