Like Nuff said - true layouts don't paddle worth a damn, because the are designed to have the edges actually just in or under the water - they plow like a bastard when paddled.

I have nothing else to add really. Only hunted Brant a couple times and they didn't seem too bright - I'd imagine that you could anchor up your current rig and try it, but there is a reason that all the layout boats are designed to "melt" into the water.

Red, you realize Clyde's boat is aluminum, right? I've hunted out of it. Just like your scull, we put a tractor weight in the bow to keep it at or below the water line when hunting. We towed it but, I've never paddled it. I wouldn't think it would paddle too well but, maybe I'm wrong.

All I know for sure is, the very next year after he died, they were at the sportsman's shows handing out foam and a template to anyone that said they had a rat, no questions asked. I just assumed that they were making them without foam before that. All of the rats I had seen prior to that had no foam in them.

I remember David showing us how to remove the foam (2 screws through the deck) for cleaning or whatever, back when we bought them at the OWF a few years ago. Maybe they started doing the foam to get the coastguard approval?

That sounds like the same foam they had at the shows.
You've had your boat awhile then because David Boys died in 2006 in November. He headed out in the fog to try and find his dog that didn't return from a retrieve and they found his body floating in the bay later that day, if I remember right.

In my opinion.....Every boat is a compromise....theres' no one "perfect" boat whether it be for duck shooting or fishing. Most boats used strictly as layouts are towed to the hunting spot by a larger tender, which also serves as a cripple chaser and decoy carrier. So far in this thread there have been sneak boats, layout boats, hybrids all discussed as though they were the used same way. (no offense to anyone intended) A true layout boat would be almost impossible to paddle under anything less that ideal conditions and then only a short distance as the crowned decks and flat bottom are not exactly condusive to that type of use. If you're talking about hunting any big water at all where the weather can change fast, you need to keep that in mind when choosing which contraption you would like to drown in.
I would suggest contacting TK for the final approval before starting any new build.

He cracked both of us up, as he was diving into his sales pitch he was pointing out the raised rib that runs midway down around the perimeter. He was trying to demonstrate how it would catch a dropped shell or pocket knife, and as he simulated said accident with his pocket knife he "dropped it" with too much steam and the knife jumped over the rib and fell into the imaginary water. My buddy laughed and told him his design didnt work and if we were hunting David would need to buy a new knife, we all laughed it off.

I just sat on the jetty plenty of days these last two seasons and watch flocks of brant light out in the middle of the bay and thought hell if I could only get a couple lines of decoys out there

I'd try it with the scull, if it works as far as getting birds but you need a different boat then you'll have an idea of what you want to build.

Up here we all use that white boat shrink wrap stuff over the top in the winter to make it look like a chunk of ice. In the early season I use my scull more like a lay-out and grass it up. What I'm getting at is I think you could wrap it in something to match the color of the water out there and you should be all set.
