What would you do?

Place for general and off topic Waterfowl talk.

What would you do?

Postby 3geese4me » Mon Jul 21, 2014 9:29 pm

I have an airman (somebody that I supervise) who I took hunting with me for the first time last year. He got bit by the bug and bought everything he needed to waterfowl hunt, minus blinds and decoys. He texts me the other day saying how excited he was for the season. I then made small talk about how much work I still had to do, to which he replied to let him know when I needed his help. So tonight, I start making long lines for my y boards. So I shoot him a text and thats when the excuses started pouring out. This is not the first time he's bailed on me, too. I don't need another hunting partner but did enjoy showing him the ropes and want to help him succeed. But if he's going to be a freeloader I don't want any part of that either.

So now my question, would you tell him to pound sand? Or give him another shot?

I would tell him if he is going to tell you to let him know when you need help to quit making excuses and saddle up or he can find somewhere else to hunt. Lay it out for him. Worse case you hurt his feelings and he don't hunt with you. I hate nothing more than people acting that way. I would set him straight and then let him decide.

The one that gets me is the "cherry pickers" who only go on good days. Text you and say something dumb like "let me know when the birds are in.... blah blah".

I hate sitting through the slow days as much as anyone else. But it's all part of bird hunting.

Nothing like a good old fashioned hoe-down to celebrate a successful raping!
To achieve success, one must possess dedication, passion and a boatload of decoys.

How is that guy ready with no decoys, or blinds?

Did he buy a bind bag, lanyard, and a gun? Bfd. If he doesn't help you get ready, eff him.

I would continue to let him go. I do whatever I can to keep people interested in the sport and to me, not helping with a few things isn't a big deal to me. I only have maybe 2 people that help me with scouting, decoy repairs, and general prep, yet a typical hunt has around 5 people with us. I'd throw it in his ear that he needs to buy some decoys and he can keep them in your trailer along with his blind that way even if he doesn't show up, atleast he is contributing.

I entertained having him start scouting and getting some of his own spots locked down. He can do that on his own time.

I agree with Eric. Sometimes playing host to new hunters is what's needed and most of the timer easier on you. 9/10 times I'm the host when I hunt with people. My boat, my gear, my spots. I don't mind it that way because it ensures a smoother hunt normally. I say keep him coming along but don't make it free when he's there have him set out decoys or put him in charge of bring the doughnuts something to offset your time and effort.

One thing that I don't stand for though is taking someone hunting then seeing them later with another group in the spot I've shown them and I make that clear when we are heading out.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

I made that very clear in the beginning that if he hunted my spots I would end his life.
