I would consider buying him a case of shells to use and make sure you buy enough wet wipes for the both of you so you can insist on wiping his butt. If he tries wiping his own butt take away his shells so he can't shoot anything. That'll learn him.

There's a difference in hosting to introduce someone to hunting, and having a guy use you and lie about wanting to help.

If after hunting last year he says "that was fun, let's do it again", I'd be much more inclined to bring him, rather than watching him spend a bunch of money on gear, offer to help get ready for the season, and then become unavailable until the season rolls around.

Introduction period is over. He's hooked. He will hunt this year, whether it's with John or someone else...he will hunt.

I pretty much get everything ready myself and use all my own gear. I like to get my gear ready myself, because I know it's done right then. I just ask the people I take to pitch in for gas and help haul stuff out. Other than that, I'm happy doing it myself. But it would kinda piss me off if someone said they are going to come over and help, then back out at the last second.

Unfortunately though this type of flakey hunter who is lazy will inevitably hunt those spots without you and most likely the day before you intend to go.

This is an airman and you're an NCO. Tell him to report to your quarters with work in mind and to bring pizza and beer. Or tell him that when he gets some rank he can ask you again if he can hunt with you.

Of course you can ask: Can you help me? If he says yes, ask him when. If he says: When?, ask him when he has some time available.

No sense getting butt hurt, if he won't help when you feel he should, just drop his sorry ass.

Whatever you do, damn sure don't take him to your best spots until you know he's rock solid. I know too many guys who have been burned off of good spots by flaky hunters that jacked a spot and pissed off the landowner.

This reminds me. It looks like we are going to be in your neck of the woods Oct 27-Nov 2. If you could start locking down spots for us, that would be great!

But seriously, I really wanna line a hunt up while we are up there, I figure the snows should be showing up nicely by then.
