A Waterfowlers Prayer

I'm sure most of you who have been Waterfowling for very long , have had those days that were so perfect you just can't get them out of your mind.
This poem was based on one of those Days.
My sons and I and my hunting partner were out on a Big Water Lake.
The wind was raging in the first part of the morning and it seemed as though we owned every duck that came by.
Like they were on a string.
When I got home I was sitting in my office looking out the window at what was still a dark black sky.
Reflecting on the day.
I have never considered myself a poet but this came to me in about 15 mins.
I thought I would share it with you.

A Waterfowler’s Prayer

We thank you Lord Jesus
Our maker and Savior
For the life that you give
And the seasons we savor

For those who love fowling
These praises we give
And ask for your blessing
As long as we live

When fall is upon us
And good weather is nye
When menacing storm clouds
Cover the sky

And the south wind roars over
The lake and the shore
And a lesser man finds himself
At home and indoors

For the flocks in the air that
Pass by our eyes
When migrating ducks all but fill
Up the skies

When the big water rumbles
At the tall white caps might
And the decoys look like they’ve
Just landed from flight

For the time with good friends
For the time with our sons
For the thundering sound of our
Firing guns

For the song of the call
That cries out, you must come
And the whistle that rolls with
A fluttering tongue

How the group at first breaks to
The left or the right
And with the last cadence
All lock up so tight

While rocking and falling their landing
Gear drop
And the hearts of the fowlers
All come to a stop

At twenty yards out the blind master
Declares
Take ‘em now boys, pick a drake
Hit him square

As each mallard tumbles
As each pintail folds
An indescribable feeling flows
Out of the soul

For this man was made
So the mandate does say
Subdue all the earth
All rule over its prey

The fish of the sea
The birds of the air
Over all living creatures
This is why you are here

But in all of your hunts
Your endeavors, your stories
Forget not your God
And bring forth his due Glory
