Date: 9/14

Time: morning

Location: AW's

Cloud Cover: clear w/light fog

Wind Direction and Velocity: nil

Temperature: hot and humid

Moon phase: waxing 78%

Special Notes: September teal opener

Waterfowl Activity: Typical for marsh with flight becoming stronger and more cooperative as morning developed.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Excellent when others weren't shooting.

Hunters: 1, soon to be 81 Dub

Guns: Dub has started shooting a 20 with me.

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): too many gators

Special Equipment: 2 spinners and the modified mallard machine splasher, the later of which incomers keyed strongly on. Almost didn't bother with it, but glad I did.

Curses: None other than it wasn't a family hunt, need to get Dub to come with me during the week when the kids are in school.

Kudos: Sweet morning in good company, blessed to be there.

Birds By Species: 12 bw teal (11 drakes and 1 hen)

The drake to hen ratio was just how they fell and not atypical for this time of the new season. More hens should start showing as their broods become ready for the trip.

When I left this morning we had 16, all drajes. Probably why we didn't see many big groups. Seemed to be a lot more groups of 5-10 than normal.

Suspected as much, but it gave me something to prattle about.

Time: morning

Location: AW

Cloud Cover: clear to partly

Wind Direction and Velocity: nil northerly?

Temperature: still summer

Moon phase: waxing 87%

Special Notes:

Waterfowl Activity: Slow enough early to have me worrying about Preston's hunt, but then they opened the bird box and we were done in under an hour.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Same as usual with September teal: wild for a while before taming down and tolling beautifully.

Hunters: 2, Dub again and my grandson, Preston

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): None thankfully, given gators in the decoys.

Special Equipment: SOS

Curses: None other than the tatailles keeping Call at the house.

Kudos: A fine time was had by all.

Birds By Species: 18 bw teal (15 drakes and 3 hens)

Taking 87yr-old Uncle Franklin in the morning, so hoping it's not all been birds fleeing the weekend crowd...

From what I've seen of the octogenarians through my blinds, it's rejuvenating. Retired super banker, Dub, is like a kid, "Look, look, look!" And it's a sure 'nuf blessing just to watch Uncle Franklin, one of the last real-deal marsh men, soak it in:

Couldn't even get him to stop long enough to pose for a hero shot to share with Aunt Norma on our last hunt:

Date: 9/16 Mon

Time: morning

Location: AW

Cloud Cover: light

Wind Direction and Velocity: next to nil easterly

Temperature: hot and humid

Moon phase: waxing 94%

Special Notes:

Waterfowl Activity: Spooky slow for longer than yesterday, but better as the morning progressed

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Better from the git-go than over the weekend.

Hunters: 2, Chereaux's (ex's) Uncle Franklin and Preston's dad (an ex-SIL), Chris

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: SOS

Curses: Couldn't work up a complaint on a bet.

Kudos: 87yr-old Franklin's still got it. He's slowed enough that I had to swing everything back to us and call the shots while they were still well out, but that was the ticket. Weren't many misses when he shot. And Chris shot well, too.

Birds By Species: 18 bw teal (13 drakes and 5 hens) 1 banded

Season Log 2023-2024

Postby Ericdc » Tue Sep 17, 2024 8:36 am

Rick, you may not care, but you have a 2024-2025 log book thread available. I noticed you are posting in last year's log book.

Edit: I just noticed you were in the right thread, your title threw me off. Carry on!

As a mod for this forum he may be able to edit the title or get DE to handle it.

Good catch. Hadn't realized I mis-titled the thread. And have no idea how to do the mod thing, but if DE can, I'd appreciate it.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Most everything was very cooperative..

Date: 9/18 Wed

Time: morning

Location: AW's

Cloud Cover: partly to light

Wind Direction and Velocity: nil

Temperature: hot

Moon phase: full

Special Notes:

Waterfowl Activity: Slowest to date by far and not nearly what I wished for Ric's wife Sharon.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Found myself hailing crazy high and wide birds, but more than expected broke and then worked.pretty.

Hunters: 2, Ric and Sharon

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: SOS but found the lame MMM wasn't a weak battery but I'd replaced on of the Dakota mallard decoys floating it with a coot decoy that wasn't buoyant enough to keep the prop as high as needed. 'Least I hope another Dakota will cure it...

Curses: Too dang hot for a long morning.

Kudos: Eventually got Sharon up to speed and filled.

Birds By Species: 18 bw teal (only checked the 6 I kept which were 5 drakes and 1 hen)

Not familiar with the SOS? Is that the thing people have been putting on their spinning Wing Decoys that ripples the water?

"Same old shit." In this case, two spinners and a Mallard Machine modified to also throw water a few feet when it dips. Little surprised I messed up on my first reference to them this season usually reads:
