In my field getting to the top is not necessary to live comfortably.
I have seen what getting to the top does to people and I have seen most of them decide it wasn't worth and choose to drop back to middle management.

I would rather be happy during the prime of my life than in my 40s.

plus I'm going to marry a rich lady.

Lucky for me my line of work didn't take that long to get there. Just get enough sea time and go take a test to get the next grade up in license. Now at the ripe old age of 26, I'm sitting back fat and happy building my pension and working towards being done with work before 50.

That's a good deal! My plan is to quit it by 50, but only time will tell.

Physically... 20s are when you're capable of doing the most physical activity.
Monetarily... 40s and over probably.

But hunting and fishing are physical activities.

I hear you on the life lessons, but a 73 year old is not keeping up on some of my hunting trips... Not possible.

I hope I am still competitive in my 30s and 40s but my body has been through a lot of punishment in sports and at 24 arthritis is already an obvious future problem.

I hope to be done by the time I'm 80.

I'm going to hunt and fish along the way...I don't see how the "normies" in the middle class will have a retirement age earlier than 80. Might as well anjoy the ride.

Out sitting on my chaise lounge reading and drinking coffee.
Doc are you gonna just pick your ducks off that little balcony this season?

No hunting for DJJ this year. It's time to do work. Gotta become a real person so I can someday provide for a family someday.
you had enough hunting/fishing adventure last year to be able to take a few years off without feeling to ruff about it doc, I did the same thing in my early twenties, build a good "life foundation" there'll be plenty more time for hunting

But that is what college was supposed to be.
That was supposed to be mine and DJJ's life/career foundation.
That's the point to going to college for a tough degree, job security.

Still gotta work your way up. I look at it like no better time than when you're young. Get over and out of the way then you got a foundation set and you coast through.

Depending on your asperations in life and your choice in degrees it is far from a scam.

But if you want to own a business, probably not the best choice.
Or if you chose leasure studies as a major, probably not the best choice.

But an applicable science is different than an experimental science degree. Engineering for example, there are more jobs than degrees

You do have to be willing to move to take advantage of them, but with a good education and an open mind you can find a job. You may make more at your job, but an education brings security.

Education doesn't bring security to my job. You have to have a MMD license for mine, and the rating of that license determines where and what size vessel you can work on.
