I'm not sure why he thinks it does.

Here...you like using these obviously.
can't see your pic. the ABS i've had in work trucks makes a weird grinding sound and once you start to slide, doesn't disengage. dunno if it was working correctly or not, but i had no recovery.

Ummm, I will read a book if you read the thread. I made the argument for ABS, (MT) is who you should be addressing...huntall6 wrote: I use my 4wd when roads are iffy because I have literally been blown by the wind into a spin and ended up in the ditch. Fair enough, I said I use it when I think it is necessary. The subject was just snow on the roads.
YES SNOW ON THE ROADS. Which can easily put you into the snow in the ditch where there is usually more snow. Or heavy drifting on the roads (very common in flatlanderville)huntall6 wrote: Using 4wd will not shorten the life o a vehicle. They don't test those components to 100K miles like they do everything else. They are meant for off road application.
My first job out of college was an Automotive Engineer, certain parts of a truck are not run through as rigorous of tests and are meant for certain situations only. For one 4X4 requires a certain amount of slip, otherwise it will destroy your truck.
WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU DRIVE IN 4wd FOR 100k?? Your right, not meant to last 100k but it is intended to be used.huntall6 wrote: Siping is now being done on a lot of tires from the manufacturer.
Yes, and the tires they do it to are engineered for that purpose.
SIPING DOES INCREASE TRACTION FOR ACCELERATING OR BRAKING, PERIOD. Wether they were engineered for it or not.

Woody brought up ABS, i just said it sucked and that my truck doesn't have it.

For the record none of my vehicles have it.

If I drove in 4WD every time it snowed I would put 10K miles on my 4WD every year. It would wear out very quickly.SIPING DOES INCREASE TRACTION FOR ACCELERATING OR BRAKING, PERIOD. Wether they were engineered for it or not.
Yes, but if the tire is not designed to handle the siping you are gambling that your tire can handle the extra stress and reduced structure.YES SNOW ON THE ROADS. I live near one of the largest lakes in the world, we have a lot of wind and drifting... I understand that sometime it is needed. Don't get me wrong I have had to drive to work in 4WD, but driving in 4WD all the time is not necessary.

i put a few thousand miles on my truck every year in 4wd, haven't had a problem yet. for the record, i was driving curvy mountain roads, so yeah, it was needed. i forgot that most of the country is dead flat, if you are going up or down steep inclines, you want 4wd.
woody, you're the only person i've ever heard arguing against siping. if it was so dangerous, tire shops wouldn't do it, period.

I'm not arguing against it. I've heard it causes more even wearing on a tire, but I would guess it will wear out the tire faster.
It most certainly reduces the structural stability of the tire and increases the forces put on the tire. That is not a good mix. I doubt anyone has done a study on the correlation between blowouts and siping, so it is hard to say if there is enough factor of safety designed in to the tire or not.
