I should say it wasn't needed but appreciated.

If you don't have weight over the rear tires, fwd will get you going faster, but I would never say it is better in the snow. Your tires only have so much grip. There is a reason that they use rear wheel drive cars for dirt racing. Sure, they use awd for rally and score trucks, but those have systems in the cars that disconnect the power to the front wheels when they let off the gas so that they can turn the vehicle, and when they get back on the gas the power gets put back to all 4 wheels.

I raced rc trucks in the 90's and was really good. The all-wheel drive cars were fucking FAST!

The all wheel drive cars could throw themselves into a corner and power-turn. Its amazing to watch what an awd can do.

It's a lot like when Copterdoc was arguing with swamp...using sailboat charts to convince him his boat wouldn't plane. Then swamp took pics of it DOING IT.

in 2wd, you operate on the balance of a pendulum. M.E would say 4 points of contact equidistant from each other is more stable.

As the resident ME, I can tell you that is correct but stability is not what we are talking about.

Pure scientific fact... If you apply force to a pair of tires you decrease the friction between them and the road.

A FWD vehicle has more weight over the drive wheels than a RWD vehicle under factory configuration.
If one adds weight over or behind the back tires it will increase the traction between the rear wheels and the road.
This combined with the fact that applying force to tires reduces traction, thus steering/control can cause RWD handle better in undesirable conditions.

So, no and maybe.

Someone already answered it correctly.

Betty, I graduated with BSME and a Minor in Aerospace with 3.5 from a top 15 engineer school. I have nothing to prove.

What part do you not understand? I feel more in control with RWD than with FWD or 4WD. That's why I don't use 4WD until I can't move with 2WD. If you like 4wd, then lock that bitch in any time you want.

To see if you guys pay attention to the forums...
We argued this same argument begore but the focus was TIRES.

Now, which is better in poor traction situations and why...
Tall and skinny or short and fat (wide)

I am curious what you think...it should be funny.
