My mom had a Suburu like you've got there about 6 years ago. It was great car. Gets around in the snow decently to.

For winter/snow tires, Cooper M/S are a great tire for the price. Currently im running Dick Cepek Radial FC II, they are wearing like iron, and have been great in the snow, dirt, mud, rain. However, they are not cheap :(

I think it might be the truck. My f250 was always gettin stuck. My z71 tahoe never got stuck no matter what tires. Hell I have a z71 now with onion slicks and you wouldn't believe some of the ditches it climbed out of back during duck season... Of corse you're from up north and you're probably gonna say our mud isn't as slick down south.
we got clay up here, you can't even comprehend how slick clay can be

We have clay too. Red clay to be exact.

According to this map you don't

Ultisols are just leeched out, nutrient deficient soils that form in the south because whatever good stuff the tobacco didn't rape from it, the moist climate has leeched out. They are not the only clay soils. Lots of soils can be clay soils, and Michigan has them.

In fact, your southron clays are low activity, meaning they aren't very sticky, meaning they are harder to get stuck in than other clay soils.

Now see, only a Northerner would think that one gets stuck in clay because it's sticky. One gets stuck in clay when it gets a little wet. And is far, FAR from sticky, which is the problem.

Nope. Sometimes you can't even walk across georgia red clay without busting your ass. SLICK.
I know about sand clay and loam also... Particle size...I have a degree in environmental science. Two actually.

The clay gets slick like ice only worse. Hard to imagine until you drive on it.

I laugh at those people, cause I'm the one with a strap full of ducks. I've drove many cars hunting, filled my dads Camry with a limit of phez and quail just this year, been to many marshes in my old piece of shit Escort, don't bother me none.

Surprising how quick they are isn't it? ;)

You're going to absolutely love that thing, the only thing that is going to stop you in it is the bad entry/exit angle of the front and back. Best tires you can put on it are the Nokian WR-G2 or the new G3's.

Soccer mom. I don't even have to quote that one for him to know who I'm talking about.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

Pffftt! I haven't filled up for less than that for a long, long time...

My truck only holds 20-22 gallons. Something like $3.15/gallon. 2 weeks ago it was $2.95/gallon.

Would love to see 3.15 a gallon. Paid 3.49 this evening.

Clay is always a little wet. That's why you have to bake it in an oven if you want to dry it out.

I'm not familiar with meridian basin mud but if it's the stuff where you literally don't move when wet, then it's very similar to what we have here. ;) I'm still trying to figure out the stuff I have to deal with, so far I have been avoiding it if there's even a chance of precipitation. Luckily everything out here drys pretty fast once the rain stops.
