My stuff got stolen last fall. Going around to pawn shops asking, "do you have any duck calls" seems harmless enough but oh no, it's not. The pawn-shop people are smart and figured out real quick what I meant and they did not like it at all.

Do you have any duck calls? Can only imagine the reactions I'd have gotten if I'd asked, " do you have my wife's engagement ring?".
lol

I'm sorry op. You gotta report it, figure out its uninsured, and write it off. Its not your favorite shotgun that got stolen...thank God.

Dammit man, sorry to hear Dan! If it's a chain, I would complain to corporate with as much detail as possible, especially the confirmation call that they found them. May not be able to get your wife's ring back, but may save the next person from getting screwed like you did. If they blow you off.............I'd call Ron and let him handle it

I thought about checking the pawns, but again, we stayed there 10 days ago - ancient history by pawn standards.

I know what ya mean. But it doesnt hurt to check anyways.

This^ just cause it got pawned doesn't mean its not still sitting in a display case. I'd go check.

Legally they cant sell it for 30 days incase the item is stolen... legally it should be in there storage room waiting out that period.

Last week we stayed at a hotel near the airport, because we had an early flight.

We get to TSA and my wife realizes that she's left her engagement ring and wedding band ('twas a set) in the bathroom at the hotel. (AFTER I asked her if she got everything from the bathroom - but that's another story).

I called the hotel, and the gal went right to our room @ 6am and called me 5 minutes later and said "they were right where you said they would be, I've got them - do you want me to mail them to you or will you be coming by to pick them up??"
I told her we were just leaving, but would be back on 4/4 if she wouldn't mind holding them in the safe.

Fast forward to this evening...

I go to the front desk at the hotel, after searching a few places the clerk finds an envelope with my wife's name on it, her phone number, the date we said we'd return, all seems well....except, there is only one ring in the envelope - and of course - it's not the one with the diamonds in it.

Mother Fucker.

I've got ZERO recourse. We certainly bear the responsibility for the fact that they were left in the room.

I guess I'm just disappointed that someone chose to steal the ring - knowing that we were coming back for it.
I'd have given them 3x what they got for it at the pawn shop - because the value to us isn't in the metal and stones, but in the idea of what it represented - but it's gone, forever.

FUCK!

That's terrible

Moving on.

Having a new ring made today, was promised it would be ready by Friday and since her birthday is Saturday, I thought it would make a good surprise.

I'll be honest. My initial thought was to try and replace the one that was lost with as close a replica as possible, for sentimental reasons (and because I'm a stingy bastard when it comes to that shit)

But then I talked to one of my close friends/mentor types and he told me he has upgraded his wife's ring 5x in 27 years, and his reasoning and insight made me give it a second thought.

I thought about 3 c-sections.

I thought about a young lady who was high-school valedictorian, 4.0 Masters Grad, who have up her career to care for our family.

I thought about the tremendous effort she puts forth every day taking care of our oldest son.

I realize that I have virtually zero responsibility at home - she handles the kids, the laundry, the shopping, the Dr. appointments, and never, ever complains.

I thought about the hunting trips to Canada and Alaska and Maine and Rhode Island and North Carolina and Kansas and Montana and Missouri and North Dakota and the work trips to California and Texas and Idaho and Missouri and Kansas and Iowa and she never, ever complains.

So, yeah - she's getting an upgrade, and I'll be perpetually grateful for the chance to do it.

And perhaps feeling a little guilty about getting mad at her for forgetting to pick them up at the hotel? Whatever the reason, it is a great thing to do. My wife's ring seems to get bigger as time goes by too. Just glad we had the first one on a separate schedule on our homeowners insurance.

I never got mad at her...it was an honest mistake.
I saw them in the bathroom as we were packing up, and didn't snag them either.
I asked if she "got everything from the bathroom" and I should have said "did you grab your rings"...because that's what I meant. I didn't give a fuck about the curling iron or the shampoo.

It was delicious. First ones I froze, for about two months, and it definitely helped the brine get in there. I'll definitely do that again, on purpose this time.
