But our elk are nearly double the size of yours.

MI is a "brown it's down" state up north. There are some APRs showing up to try and get more mature deer, but the hunting heritage here is kill the first thing that walks buy with horns. And it's hard to change the minds of guys that have been doing it for 50 years. I could care less one way or the other.

That's like saying you can't believe their sheep are so small, because your steers average over 1,000 lbs.

Whitetails in Michigan rarely get the chance to get really mature, but even when they do, they are still quite a bit smaller on average than a Midwestern corn-fed deer. I've seen plenty of whitetails around here dress out over 300.

Biggest dressed deer I've ever seen come out of MI was 205 dressed and that was a 3.5 year old southern deer. My dad shot one around 240, but that was a long time ago. And it was an old deer that somehow made it through 4 or 5 years without getting shot.

Typically the further north, the bigger a species gets. Good food sources are a bonus. Terrain and habits also play a big role. Definitely hear of a lot of big deer coming from WI.

Genes have far, far less to do with it than groceries.

The deer here aren't eating any better than the deer in Maryland, Nebraska, Missouri, Pennsylvania, or just about any other state with a few exceptions.

However, a larger proportion of them are reaching boone and crockett size.

"More big deer' is more appropriate than "bigger deer". A big deer can happen anywhere, and they happen in Kansas a lot, but you're right, the numbers don't lie.

I always felt like a deer in Kansas has a better chance of getting shot because the country is so open (compared to WI), but Kansas also doesn't have the hunter density that we do.

Only getting one buck/ season also really helps Kansas bucks out.

Absolutely. It also helps that gun season doesn't happen during the rut. The terrain of KS isn't capable of holding deer like WI. It gets way more open the further west you go.
